Speaking from the South Lawn of the White House, where he held a concert in honor of the upcoming holiday, Mr. Biden assailed efforts to erase Black history through book bans, limit opportunities through attacks on diversity programs and chip away at freedoms like the right to vote.
Our history is not just about the past, he told the crowd. Its about our present and our future. Its whether that future is a future for all of us, not just for some of us.
Folks, Black history is American history, he said to applause, vowing that his administration would always uplift it and protect it.
Mr. Biden signed legislation in 2021 making June 19, or Juneteenth, a federal holiday, the first new national holiday since one honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was established in 1983. The holiday marks the day in 1865 that the last remaining slaves, living in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
It wasnt just a symbolic gesture, Mr. Biden said. It was a statement of fact. It was about a statement of faith. It was a testament to the resilience of generations of Black Americans, who kept their eyes set on the nations North Star.

The day had long been celebrated by Black Americans, but members of Congress and a civil rights activist from Texas pushed for years to make it a federal holiday. Mr. Biden has said that signing the legislation was one of his proudest moments as president.

I keep faith in Pres. Biden, who's the hardest working, most productive president in my lifetime, yet it's angering and depressing to see the platform allow thousands upon thousands of haters' comments.

(90,488 posts)Thanks to a quirk of the old analog system, savvy phone customers had access to chat lines long before that term was coined. Beginning in the mid-1960s, the Bell System started implementing its new Electronic Switching System, and during that lengthy and elaborate process, the modern switches were installed parallel to the old mechanical devices already in place. As a result, a loop was created so that when a circuit was overloaded, people could talk to one another between the beeps of a busy signal or during the spaces between a repeating Your call could not be completed as dialed recording. It didnt take long for teens to exploit this easy and cost-free way (because you didnt get charged for an incomplete call) to talk to a whole horde of people. The key was that a lot of people had to dial the same number in order to properly overload the circuit. The phenomenon was called different things in different locales, including the Jam Line, the Beep Line, and the Pipeline.

(990 posts)During a time where other journalists refer to tfg as President tfg, I wish they would take more care to address the actual President by his title.
