Does anyone remember the name Heather Heyer, she woke up one morning went to counter protest a bunch of Nazis and was killed. There was outrage here.
Yesterday, three people went to a political rally, one of them was shot to death and the other two were shot. There were jokes here, there was bullshit theory based on nothing here.
Political violence is never right, full stop. We are supposed to be an evolved democracy showing others how to grow into their democracies. We are failing.
This group has been very important to me for a long time, over 20 year, it helped me heal after 1/6, gave me a place to vent, to learn, to keep up with current events and fast moving stories.
The last 15 hours, we have failed. We have to get better. In the aftermath of 1/6, I wished Ill on a lot of people. I still hope they are brought to Justice and sometimes was a little enthusiastic when they were brought to Justice.
Yesterday, someone tried to assassinate a former President of the United States, in the process one bystander was killed and we are making jokes, coming up with nonsense theories based on nothing. People, we must be better than this.
I am not saying people should not be talking about this but they should be factual, they should be compassionate, they should understand the gravity of the situation.

IMO, you make your bed then enjoy it.

(121,395 posts)Anybody can say anything, and whether the post is taken down depends on whether it's alerted and what a jury decides to do with it. Speculation, some of it improbable or dumb or even offensive, is inevitable because people want immediate answers. If they don't get them - and in situations like this the answers never come immediately - they start spitballing, and the results are often stupid. And brand new posters often provide the craziest suggestions, probably because they're bots or trolls. They will usually be promptly eliminated. Most of the discussion has been civil and sane; that which was not has been mostly challenged and/or removed. Hang in there; just keep in mind that there are always going to be disruptors as well as people posting in good faith but who haven't settled down and thought carefully about what they're about to say.

(12,290 posts)Thanks go to MIRT to keeping it contained.
I noticed that the most incendiary posts were from new people. That isnt an accident.
There were a few old-timers who reacted with skepticism right after it happened. That is to be forgiven based on the deceptive, manipulative nature of Trump and his handlers. People are stressed about how their friends and family are being constantly attacked, and this has been something stoked by MAGA republicans.
This election is like none other, and the stakes have never been higher. This is an unexpected factor and people may not react in a way that is acceptable to you.

I'm sorry that someone wsa killed and that others got hurt, but honestly, I have as much empathy for the orange man as he did for Paul Pelosi.

(2,380 posts)I am so disappointed.
I've always been proud of my efforts to be a good person and do the right thing, even if I do fail at that more frequently than I would like to admit. But I'll be damned if I am going to join in with some of this stuff, most especially the jokes and celebratory responses to an assassination attempt, not to even mention the dead and injured left in it's wake. This is a tragedy of the highest order and we are failing to recognize it as such.
We all need to be asking what would drive a lunatic to commit such an evil act. And since we can never hope to control the behaviors of others, our duty is to reflect on ourselves and then strive to do better. Sadly, this will be an unpopular position to declare.

(8,870 posts)I will not vote for him, but I will take no joy in someone trying to execute him and killing and wounding others in the process. I would never be selected to serve on a jury for him as my feelings are made up but, this is NOT the solution.

Our lives matter too.
The candidate was almost immediately pronounced to be fine and is at home.
The media hasnt yet even given the name of the rallygoer who was killed. That persons life matters too.
When all of our lives matter equally we will have a near perfect democracy. We are alas very far from that.
I think you are totally right to call attention to insensitive behavior but the lack of interest in the killed and seriously injured in the immediate aftermath of this particular incident is a graver concern to me.

(33,777 posts)A possible VP pick has blamed this on the Biden Campaign's *rhetoric*.
A woman who was there finished her interview with "We have to take our country back."
A woman in the stands was wearing a t-shirt that said "Mean Tweets".
Last night at DU was a primal scream. I don't feel one way or the other about another mass shooting in America - regardless of where it occurred or who was shot. We are powerless to stop gun violence in this country - and our enemies (Yes I consider things like Trump, JD Vance, M Johnson, etc etc enemies of the Constitution) - have no problem turning this around on our President and us.
Thoughts and prayers and a primal scream.

(27,103 posts)I'm not saying I'm happy about it, and I'm concerned about possible political and social repercussions, but I'm not grieving anything, and I do find the whole thing kind of questionable.
I agree that political violence is wrong. It's also Trump's middle name.
