where I work the people are 90% black. I am one of the 10% white people there. I came into the office this morning and nobody was talking about the news. I asked what everybody thought about Kamala Harris. no response was tepid at best. One person said well I wish there was somebody better. Again, this is purely anecdote doesn’t really mean much of anything in the grand scheme of things, but I think it is wrong to assume that Black people are just going to be OK with Harris because of the color of her skin.
now that isn’t to say that they were necessarily super pumped about Biden, but I think it’s interesting that there wasn’t a lot of excitement.
I work for a small school bus company in Minnesota where I do IT work and also drive a school bus. As I said, our staff is 90% black and some other POC.

(3,359 posts)I would say generally, they’re on top of most things political some more than others, but it is a good point that if they’re not super politically engaged, maybe they don’t put a lot of thought towards it. I honestly don’t know a few people there that we have quite a few political conversations.
Think. Again.

(3,359 posts)My point is that we shouldn’t take anything for granted. At all.
I was a little shocked at the response.
Think. Again.

(22,813 posts)Until a new nominee is officially selected, members are permitted to advocate for or against any candidates. If a member doesn’t want to help a Harris candidacy, at this point they don’t have to.
Once we have a nominee, DU will switch back to General Election mode and everyone will be expected to support the nominee.
Think. Again.

(22,813 posts)There's quite a lot of whiplash going on at the moment due to these unprecedented, rapidly changing events. This too shall pass.

(3,359 posts)But I do just want to state that I love that Kamala is going to be our nominee. She was my initial favorite i 2019 until she suspended her campaign.
Just want to clear that up.

IMO women's rights will be a major if not "the" major issue this year.

(3,359 posts)I support Harris. She was my favorite early in 2019 and I was extremely happy when she was named VP later on after she ended her campaign.

(19,845 posts)It's the fact that most people outside of political online forums are pretty disengaged, and they form their political opinions solely based on soundbites that they hear as they live their busy lives.

(703 posts)then they, like everyone else will form their opinions. My military retired magas are mostly quiet for now but they will pop soon since they are mostly Ditto Heads and are waiting for what Hannity has to say.

find it hard to fathom how disengaged others are from politics. I heard a podcast about it. I think it was Chris Hayes interviewing someone who studies the topic. Listening to it brought me a dose of reality.
If I can find it, I'll post the link here.
BTW, Ed, I like "ground reports" so don't let the response to your post keep you from posting other info.
on edit:
I've checked Chris Hayes, Preet Bahara, and Ezra Klein and can't find it. I will think a little more on it and it might come to me.

(39,510 posts)I decided that when I saw that commercial that was made and is posted here. It is about how "he's a felon" and "she's a prosecutor."
That commercial, which is 54 seconds, hit every point. Every salient point. But the thing that is most amazing about is that it was made back way back when and now, nearly a decade later, it is totally relevant.
It actually gives me the goosebumps to think about it.
Her time wasn't then, but her time is now.
