Can you think of a Democratic parallel to the present Republican primary?

Is there any Democrat that we could say was crazy like Newt Gingrich but that we felt had a snowball's chance in hell of winning? Or a faux Democrat much like Romney is a faux Republican?

Who would be the Gingrich and Romney of the Democratic Party?

Perhaps someone like a Ben Nelson or James Traficant?

I think there are parallels between Romney and Kerry, and not just because of the state they're from.

They're both the de facto nominees because voters "want someone electable." Both long winded. Both have been on all sides of an issue. Both speak in riddles at times. Both hard to nail down. The "base" is unenthusiastic about both. Etc. Etc...

It could be argued that Dean is Gingrich.

closest I can come up with, and this is mild to these republicans, now, is Kennedy and Carter when Kennedy purposely snubbed Carter at the DNC in 1980. I lost a lot of restpect for Ted Kennedy for that snub. Carter was a decent human being and the Presisdent. He did not deserve that.

democrats need a president who is a living legend, a superman in every respect.
we want an energetic, charismatic, compassionate rhodes scholar who is tremendously successful yet fights passionately for the common man, while having lived their entire life absent an hint of scandal, beyond reproach in all respects.

because we want our president to lead our country, to fight for us, to make everything better.

republicans need a president who will entertain and distract us from big business taking advantage of the commons, crushing unions, discriminating, exporting jobs, polluting rivers, the atmosphere, the food supply, all while the super-rich extract wealth from customers, businesses, investors, and workers and kick back enough to republicans so they can maximize wealth concentration.

the crap big business pulls these days is so crazy that republicans need to remove all expectations of normalcy from the federal government. a merely genial senial grandpa figure like reagan couldn't even cut it these days. the corporate stink is so bad by now that they need someone so incredibly bat-shit crazy as our national figurehead that billionaires paying tax at a much lower average rate (on the portion of their income they haven't kept in the caymans or in iras!) than most of the middle class seems reasonable by comparison.
