I grew up in Ohio and served in the military. I worked horse and dairy farms growing up in rural farms and my father was a West Virginia hillbilly who sought a better life in the military and then the auto industry after serving 28 years in the Air Force and National Guard, much like Walz. His message and character resonate with me. When I first ready JD Vances book, I knew it was trash when all my friends said it was about someone like me (I eventually went into tech and now in cybersecurity for more than 15 years). Why was Vances story trash? Because he basically missed all the key points that most people in Appalachia have to deal with. Its not addiction by the way
its extreme corporate greed by mine owners who dont give a damn for the workers. My Uncle, who owned three mines, was good to his men and worked along side of them. I made beer runs with him on Fridays to bring his workers happy hour and he held a bbq every week for them. He made sure they all were taken care of and gave them good pay and benefits. Vances book reads like Munchausen by proxy the way he throws his mom under the bus. I hated it.
Anyway, I can tell Walzs story is authentic and he is the real deal. A common man for the people who not only understands the common mans plight, but appreciates the people and has walked the walk.
I am so excited for this and I can honestly say I have not been this excited for a ticket in my life. Obama was greatness. This ticket has legendary potential. I just maxed our contributions for the general and am planning down ticket donations. Lets. Fucking. gooooooooooo!

Our state is gerrymandered to death and weve been trying to fix that for years.
And I think there are more Democrats and people who lean Dem here than most realize. Hopefully this new exciting energy will get them to the polls.
I read Vances book when it first came out and disliked it as well. He basically calls everyone in his town lazy who got beaten down in bad circumstances. Hes done zero since he left to help that area prosper.

Well, not counting his coup plans....

(7,009 posts)J.D. Vance isn't really an anchor for the in-state vote. With the pro-choice referendum on the ballot, and an infusion of cash to help Sherrod Brown, getting the vote totals among black voters back up to near Obama levels in the big counties ought to do it. My guess is that Ohio is 50-50. And I think her odds are better than that in North Carolina and Florida.

(3,406 posts)A special election in August 2023 was for a referendum to make it harder for voter-led initiatives to amend the Ohio State Constitution to be proposed and approved. It failed and it's failure of this issue cleared the way cleared the way for Issue 1 & 2 to be passed. It had an unusually high voter turnout. LaRose tried his best to get Issues 1 & 2 off the ballot and wasted taxpayers money to do it. Ohio voters thwarted DeWine and LaRose in the last 3 elections
Issue 1 was reproductive health and Issue 2 legalized marijuana.

(53,377 posts)Brown and Obama are the only Democrats who have won statewide since 2006 (other than a Supreme Court race). The Ryan Vance race sealed it for me. Ryan was, on paper, the best candidate we could have hoped for while Vance was awful in what was a Democratic year. All of that, and he did about as well as Biden did. Brown has won, frankly I am worried for him this time, but he is a unicorn.
