(15,759 posts)"A retired Army National Guard noncommissioned officer who was once the top Democrat on the House Veterans Affairs Committee could become the next vice president.
Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris announced Tuesday
.....
Patrick Murphy, an Army veteran who was Walz' roommate when they were both freshmen in Congress, called Walz a "soldier's soldier."
"The two largest federal agencies are DoD and the VA, so someone who has intimate knowledge of both is incredibly important," Murphy, who served as Army under secretary during the Obama administration, said in a phone interview with Military.com. "He was a field artilleryman who has tinnitus as diagnosed by the VA, so he understands the plight of our brother and sister veterans."
Walz enlisted in the Army National Guard in Nebraska in 1981 and retired honorably in 2005 as the top enlisted soldier for 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery Regiment, in the Minnesota National Guard, according to a copy of his records provided by the Minnesota Guard. He reached the rank of command sergeant major and served in that role, but he officially retired as a master sergeant for benefits purposes because he didn't finish a required training course, according to the records and a statement from the Minnesota Guard.
...
His Guard career included responding to natural disasters in the United States, as well as a deployment to Italy to support U.S. operations in Afghanistan, according to a 2018 article by Minnesota Public Radio. Walz earned several awards, including the Army Commendation Medal and two Army Achievement Medals, according to his military records. Working a civilian job as a high school teacher and football coach, the Nebraska native was also named that state's Citizen Soldier of the Year in 1989, according to official biographies." (More)

(7,313 posts)He enlisted at 17 in the National Guard. Not sure which state. He rose through the ranks to become a CSM (Command Sergeant Major) but didn't complete some coursework for the Sergeants Major Academy so when he retired it was one grade lower as Master Sergeant.

(19,555 posts)As he had filed with the FEC , etc., as a candidate for Congress. Tim was still teaching at the time as well.
So running for Congress took much of his time. The 1st CD runs the length of southern Minnesota from Wisconsin to the East to South Dakota to the West. There is a lot of rural areas between Sioux Falls to Winona with Rochester just 50 miles from the Wisconsin border.
Tim did not retire under false circumstances.

(769 posts)lying about one's own military history. I would like the Dems to introduce a law against lying about someone else's military record. Let's see the right try to defeat that.

Many followers not familiar with the military are asking me “so what’s the big deal about a command sergeant major?”
Walz joined at 18 as a private. Rose through the NCO (sergeant) ranks, each requiring extreme competence at increasingly demanding jobs with more people & responsibility at every rank.
When you reach “Master Sergeant” you are selected to serve as a First Sergeant (1SG) of a unit…if you’re good enough. Then, those 1SGTs compete for selection to Sergeant Major. Only the best Sergeant Majors are selected for Command Sergeant Major (CSM) billets.
CSMs serve as the senior enlisted person in the unit and the advisor to Commanders at battalion and above. Having served with dozens of CSMs as my unit & command “battle buddy” I will attest they were all awesome.
They know what they’re doing. They uphold standards. They speak their minds to all ranks (private to generals). They’re not afraid of getting bad news because they know how to fix things when they go wrong. And they serve the command (their commander and their soldiers) with a selfless integrity and a complete dedication.
During social events and informal occasions, they’re usually a whole bunch of fun. And they always have great stories. But they’re always professional.
So, those are my thoughts on Command Sergeants Major. While I don’t know the details of @GovTimWalz career wearing the cloth of our country, just the fact that he volunteered to serve and wore the CSM rank tells me a lot about him.

(61,653 posts)Because they know that whether or not one actually served in combat is usually not their decision. Most vets served in non-combat jobs, like Couchboy.
As the old saying goes, They also serve who only stand and wait.
Vance is an asshole, just like his boss. MSGT Walz served honorably in the billets he was assigned to.

Mike claims to be a combat decorated Green Beret with 4 bronze stars. So, maybe they are getting them confused.

(1,884 posts)Votevets are putting good information out there to counter the usual lies that our favorite Republican party comes up with. Anyone who volunteers to join the military nowadays, where there isn’t a draft in force at this time, deserves our Respect, not denigrating lies.
While the Maga morons are at what about the bone spurs. What ridiculous excuse do you have to justify trump’s behavior back during the Vietnam war when all of us at that time either got drafted or enlisted in most cases. Of course, our hero with his mouth, the bully coward that he is, came up with that bone spurs bullshit to Dodge the draft. Then of course he has the audacity to denigrate John McCain, and other military people calling them suckers and losers. . Tim Walz is someone to be honored and respected for his service. The orange National disgrace isn’t worthy to even shine Tim’s shoes.
