But in an article published by the conservative website The Bulwark, journalist A.B. Stoddard warns that if Harris wins in November, an "entire army of Republicans" is "ready to block certification of the election at the local level."
"Trump is no longer on track to win the election — which he has been for more than six straight months," Stoddard wrote. "Instead, the momentum, money, voter registration, volunteering, grassroots organizing, polling, and online engagement all favor the Democrats, and it looks now like Trump could easily lose.
“But that won’t happen, because Trump doesn't lose.…. No need to worry about mayhem on January 6, 2025 when Congress meets in joint session; the election deniers plan to stop a result right away if it looks like Harris is winning."
Stoddard continues, "Their goal: Refuse to certify anywhere — even a county that Trump won — and prevent certification in that state, which prevents certification of the presidential election. A Harris victory could become a nightmare."

(61,418 posts)And it would be a nightmare.
The bigger the landslide the harder to pull it all off.
Especially with so many people being charged for the last insurrection.
My bigger worry is something Putin might pull.
But even he seems to be facing reality and quickly negotiated a deal
before Kalama got into the WH.
Think. Again.

That's why I'm glad to see so much public discussion about them.

(61,418 posts)I think it is deliberate.
Sunshine is the best disinfectant.
We may see isolated attempts.
These hotshot attorneys from last time are losing their law licenses and going to jail.
Hard to face that possibility for saving Trump who is becoming less and less
likable by the day.

(61,418 posts)Like Trump did to Biden after the election.
They wanted Biden to call off the inauguration until the courts and election offices "decided things."
Or calls for Biden to take the oath behind closed doors, it was too dangerous out in the open, etc.
Biden said hell no, I am going to take the oath on the appointed day.
End of story. And he did.
They cannot stop Kamala from taking the oath if she wins the election by a landslide.

“Unhumans,” an anti-democratic screed that Posobiec co-wrote with the professional ghostwriter Joshua Lisec, comes with endorsements from some of the most influential people in Republican politics, including, most significantly, vice-presidential candidate JD Vance.
As they tell it, modern progressivism is just the latest incarnation of an ancient evil dating back to the late Roman Republic and continuing through the French Revolution and Communism to today. Often, they write, “great men of means” are required to crush this scourge. The contempt for democracy in “Unhumans” is not subtle. “Our study of history has brought us to this conclusion: Democracy has never worked to protect innocents from the unhumans,” write Posobiec and Lisec.
One of their book’s heroes is the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, who overthrew the democratic Second Spanish Republic in the country’s 1930s civil war. The authors call him a “great man of history” and compare him to George Washington. They quote him on what doesn’t work against the unhuman threat: “We do not believe in government through the voting booth. The Spanish national will was never freely expressed through the ballot box.”
Nakedly authoritarian ideas like this one are not uncommon in the dank corners of the reactionary internet, or among the sort of groups that led the Jan. 6 insurrection. “Unhumans” lauds Augusto Pinochet, leader of the Chilean military junta who led a coup against Salvador Allende’s elected government in 1973, ushering in a reign of torture and repression that involved tossing political enemies from helicopters.
Pinochet-inspired helicopter memes have been common in the MAGA movement for years. And as the historian David Austin Walsh wrote last year, there’s long been a cult of Franco on the right. Nevertheless, it’s extremely unusual for a candidate for vice president of the United States to openly align himself with autocratic terror.

These two ignored direct advice from their county attorney, ignored a letter from the attorney general saying don't do it, and now after indictment by a grand jury, their not inconsiderable legal expenses are coming out of their own pockets.
It's something to direct the crazy ones' attention to. If it has no effect, then FAFO, I guess.

(1,959 posts)In the swing states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, Rolling Stone and American Doom identified nearly 70 pro-Trump election conspiracists currently working as county election officials who have questioned the validity of elections or delayed or refused to certify results. At least 20 of these county election officials have refused or delayed certification in recent years.
Certification of election results is what legal experts consider a “ministerial task,” and one required by state and local law. But as Trump’s lies about the 2020 election have taken hold, Republicans nationwide have decided that certification provides them an opportunity to hear fraud allegations — and refuse to officially count their local votes. Republicans have refused to certify election results at least 25 times since Trump lost the 2020 election to President Joe Biden.

(148,224 posts)There is no army. There are a few county officials who claim they will not certify. Some tried that in 2020. None succeeded, actually.
There is no freaking "Army." Do you know what an army looks like? The Republicans don't have such a thing. Nope. They have some misfits who have weaseled their way into local offices. There are laws against what they think they are going to try to do. Arrest them. Try them. Put them in prison.
This is just plain nonsense, designed to stir up FUD. You know what FUD is, I'm very sure.

(1,959 posts)I live on a planet where the supreme court, in the country I was born, is corrupt.
Where the previous president elected in 2016 tried mightly to hold on to power after being voted out.
Where people died trying to protect the very foundation of Democracy.
Where our elected representatives were forced to cower and hide under their desks, and put on their gas masks while at work.
Where the traitorous voted-out-ex-president watched from his couch and was thrilled with the whole thing... for hours.
Where that same asshole seemed to enjoy the fact that his second in command, a person from his own fucking party, might just get hung by the neck until he was dead.
Excuse me if I DO NOT sit back and relax, and think that everything is gonna be just fine.

(38,777 posts)"The Michigan measure also speeds up the timeline for completing the post-election canvass and clarifies that only the governor can submit a list of presidential electors to congress. That’s an attempt to limit confusion over alternate or false elector slates like the kind Trump’s campaign organized in 2020, including in Michigan, where several Republicans are now fighting related criminal charges. "
"The new Michigan law similarly states that partisan election canvassers at both the county and state levels have a "ministerial, clerical, and nondiscretionary duty" to certify results based on results compiled by local clerks. "

This crap was tried in 2020 but the state supreme court, dominated by Democrats, shut them down.
With the new laws, they'll have even less of a chance to succeed.

(20,051 posts)If a refusal to certify gets passed upward to them, we need to know if THEY are honest enough to do the certification.

(38,777 posts)History shows they tried to prevent certification in the past and they failed miserably.
Have any evidence that they'll succeed this year while taking account the changes to the laws here in Michigan making such an attempt even harder then it was in 2020?
Remember that the state supreme court, the state legislature, the governorship, the state AG, and the state SOS are controlled by Democrats
Think. Again.
(20,051 posts)But the rightwing plan seems to be to screw up the election count process in as many ways as possible to stall long enough to kick the vote to the House of Representatives.

Unfortunately, trust is no longer an option, they already blew that out the window.
