(1,370 posts)Do you mean, on that day? Or in general? Because FYI, all hell has been breaking loose for long about a decade now, give or take a little.

(115,836 posts)Some people were convinced all the electricity in the world would disappear or something but I didn't believe it. A friend and I rented an airplane (I was working as a flight instructor at the time) so we could fly around and see if anything happened at 24:00 GMT (6:00 pm local time), like the whole electrical grid going out. The airlines were so afraid there would be glitches that they cancelled their flights that evening, so we had the skies around the normally very busy MSP area pretty much to ourselves. It was weird - we were the only plane talking to ATC for that half hour or so before 6:00 during what's normally the evening rush hour. And, of course, nothing happened, so we landed and went home to watch TV.

(26,549 posts)The Mayan calendar actually ended a few months ago. The people who calculated the 12/21/12 date didn't take leap years into account.

Those are numbers from a number system that humans invented.
Used to represent a calendar system that humans invented.
Using a regional convention to denote date that humans invented.
My guess is that any perceived significance is also the invention of humans.

(3,650 posts)Visiting on Isla Mujeres (I lived there years ago) and meeting my son for the holidays for the visit to lovely Isla. We plan to spend the 21st at the Mayan ruins and pyrimids near Cancun to celebrate the end of the world. LOL! Then we will return to Isla to celebrate that the world didn't end on the beaches of Isla. What could be better. We have been planning this trip for two years since we last visited Isla Mujeres and came up with this good reason or excuse to return this year.
