Scoop: Generals come to Harris' defense on Afghanistan

Ten generals and admirals are mobilizing to defend Vice President Kamala Harris from Republican attempts to tie her to the chaotic 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Why it matters: The withdrawal has emerged as a major campaign issue in the lead-up to Tuesday's presidential debate, with Harris coming under fire from former President Trump, House Republicans and parents of victims of the Abbey Gate suicide attack, which killed 13 American service members.

The push to defend Harris comes from retired military brass, including three with four-stars: Admiral Steve Abbot, who served as deputy homeland security advisor to George W. Bush, Gen. Lloyd W. Newton and Gen. Larry R. Ellis, who has never previously endorsed a political candidate.
Some of the military officials are also fanning out on TV this week to defend Harris' record, two people familiar with the plans told Axios.

Trump let a bunch of bad guys go free, without consulting the government of Afghanistan. He set an arbitrary date for withdrawal without any planning for it or input from the military. He left the mess on the Resolute Desk with no hint as to how to execute his ill conceived agreement to withdraw.

Like always, he took a crap on the world and left it for others to clean up. To the retired guys with stars on their shoulders, THAT was inexcusable and it cost lives that should not have been lost. Adding more graves at ANC is a tad more awful than the self serving photo op Trump did recently. He created more widows by his hand holding with the Taliban.

Nuance is completely lost in the media. When the managed media misinformed masses listen to these reports at all, they only read the headlines and they see, “Some general denies the Afghanistan withdrawal was a fiasco.”, Which automatically translates in their minds as, “It was.” That’s all they will ever know about it. WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. review led by the National Security Council of the chaotic 2021 withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan largely lays the blame on former President Donald Trump, saying President Joe Biden was “severely constrained” by the decisions of his predecessor.

The White House on Thursday publicly released a 12-page summary of the results of the so-called “ hotwash ” of U.S. policies around the ending of the nation’s longest war, taking little responsibility for its own actions during some of the darkest moments of Biden’s presidency.

The administration said most of the after-action reviews, which were transmitted privately to Congress on Thursday, were highly classified and would not be released publicly.

“President Biden’s choices for how to execute a withdrawal from Afghanistan were severely constrained by conditions created by his predecessor,” the White House summary states, noting that when Biden entered office, “the Taliban were in the strongest military position that they had been in since 2001, controlling or contesting nearly half of the country.”
