(947 posts)Every write up of their wheeled products say quality is dismal. Except for the design (until the cyberthingy) and power there is actually very little positive about it. Then you add Musk. Tesla (except the cyberthingy) was not his idea. He bought it and hasn't moved it forward.

I looked at the Model Y and went with a VW instead. Zero regrets - the ID.4 was "best" for my needs.
Charging was a consideration, particularly back in 2021 when I bought it. But I've done multiple 1000+ mile road trips in the VW with no major issues. Charging is much better these days and continuing to improve. Now that Tesla is opening their chargers to others, the only reason to buy a Tesla today is because you like the car (and the company) itself.

(557 posts)Seems to be the best compromise. I'm skeptical that electrics could wipe out gas-powered cars unless the charging speed were extremely quick, the range was much higher, and charging stations were as common as gas stations now.
If I lived in an apartment or row house or had to park on the street, charging options would be severely limited. It would be a disqualifier.

i understand the loathing of musk. the a high fiber diet will generate a better entity than he will ever be. but...
dammit, the cars are damned good cars. i came very close to not buying my model Y for the "i hate elon" reason but in the end, it was the best EV that i tested. okay, i liked the model 3 better but i couldn't give up the hatch after 20 years with my prius.
if you want an EV and can't get past musk, i can highly recommend hyundai or kia. of the vehicles i test drove, the ioniq 6 and EV6 were damned good choices. (wasn't a fan of the ford mustang; VW wasn't doing test drives; and chevy discontinued the bolt and the equinox wasn't available at the time.)
however, if you're going to be a purist against CEOs, don't buy petrol (koch industries), attend events at any number of venues (e.g., sports teams). don't buy building materials (home depot and menards are the options where i live in madison). don't go out to eat at (just about) any chain restaurant.
if my ownership of a tesla is a disownable offense, then disown me now. it won't stop me voting from harris/walz; it won't make me any less of a liberal, but the hypocrisy will be disappointing.

(6,604 posts)It is certainly not a practical vehicle if longer range is a concern. My commute uses about 25% of the capacity each day, and I can easily trickle charge that amount each night on 110v.

(11,474 posts)Elon's stupidity aside, the design of the cars just doesn't appeal to me. I considered a Model Y a few years ago and there too many things I didn't like, from the body style to the seats. Biggest one was the user interface, I simply don't want everything on one screen.
Got a VW ID.4 instead and I love it. Really nice vehicle and a good replacement for my RAV4 EV.

(10,912 posts)Been at the dealer under warranty getting fixed for about 3 and a half months so far. Will be hopefully getting rid of it when its fixed, but starting to ponder replacement ideas (replacement wont happen for 2 years).
My wife likes the look of the Subaru EV too

(11,474 posts)Range is a bit less than the competition, and fast charging speeds are on the lower side. If you charge at home it would be a great city car, but might suffer on road trips.
Lots of options out there, shop and do the research.

(11,474 posts)You can get an EV with a 300+ mile range for under $40K. GM has a Equinox that'll come in for less than $30K after incentives. And EV batteries now have a long enough life to outlast the car itself.
The bigger issue is charging. We don't have nearly enough public charging, but that is changing quickly.

i know other EVs are starting to get access to the supercharger network but i don't see that for 2-3 years for wide adoption. my car (a 2005 2nd generation prius with almost 250k miles on it, purchased by me in late 2004).
other networks are not nearly as reliable. for the heck of it, i've tried a few different ones around madison and there are too many hurdles.

In October 2023, Toyota and Idemitsu Kosan announced a partnership to develop solid-state batteries for EVs. The companies aim to establish a robust supply chain and mass produce commercial solid-state EV batteries as early as 2027. They should hold charges 67 percent longer.
Of course, if one waits for the perfect car and battery, they might be to old to drive.

(11,474 posts)It could happen in three years, could happen later. If it does happen, it will probably be expensive at first. And, as with a lot of new technology, there may be hiccups in the first versions.

(1,246 posts)I was an early adopter of hybrids and have had various kinds since 2005. When we finally move to a house with enough juice for a charging station, I will probably upgrade to either a plugin hybrid or full electric. But I'm absolutely allergic to putting money in Elon's pocket, so whatever car it is, it won't be Tesla.

(1,246 posts)I want to let the dust settle a bit more on the Prologue, but I'm a diehard Honda fan, so it's definitely something I'm watching. My first Accord Hybrid saved my life in a nasty crash I walked away from with nary a scratch, so when the other driver's insurance paid up, I immediately got another. The one I'm driving now is its replacement.
I love the Volvos, but if the Prologue's next year or two are good, I'll probably get one of those.

I find the current selections probably convenient for short distances, but if you need a car for road trips or long distances just to the grocery store, I can understand how there doesnt seem to be as much viability in even the longer range cars.

(152 posts)I have no intention of every buying one or making Musk richer. I have a 2007 Honda CR-V which has been great for 17 years. At some point, I'll need to replace it and I'm looking at either an electric or hybrid SUV. I figure it might be another 3 - 4 years before I serious consider a new vehicle and hopefully by then battery range will increase significantly.

Not sure if I can ever afford one, but maybe a used one in ten or fifteen years whenever my current car gives up the ghost.
Second pick would be a Toyota, which all my previous cars have been.

(34,692 posts)because my husband wanted to try it for commuting. He seems to like it a lot. We have a charging station at home, and there is one in his work parking lot. There will need to be a lot more infrastructure for them to be really accepted, though. I would probably try a hybrid first for myself, but I wouldn't be opposed to owning another ev.

(790 posts)Besides, at the moment, I'm doing great with my 2019 Chevy Volt (last model year for the Volt), which functions as if it were a purely electric car 95% of the time for me, but also allows me great driving range by burning gasoline if necessary.
By time I want to buy another new car there will probably be many great non-Tesla options.

(10,391 posts)I'm not saying I would or wouldn't buy a Tesla - I've done no research on what EV I'm going to buy in the next two or so years. Some of my friends have them and like them.
But I don't care what the CEO of the company says. I want to know what the logistics of the car are. Reliability, affordability of repair, performance, how enjoyable it is to drive, longevity, etc.
My politics don't run my entire life and every choice I make in it. What an exhausting way to live.

(805 posts)Overall reliability at 48 (out of 100). I'm not quite sure how the calculate that, because all their listed models are lower than that.
We just bougt a Subaru Crosstrek, rated at 99. I much prefer something reliable. In general, electic and hybrid cars (especially plug-in) are worse on reliability. So I'm not going to pay more for an inferior product.

(64,643 posts)and I wouldn't buy a Tesla now. That said, I can't say I'd never buy one, just like I'd consider a Porsche today, 60 years later. Put Elon out on the curb, sort out some of your engineering/design flaws, build a better SUV (think 4Runner, Wrangler, Bronco) and I'd happily consider it. Someday.

(14,594 posts)I probably wouldn't ever buy one even with progressive ownership. There are all kinds of new models made by established companies and some new start-ups. You can buy some nice EVs cheaper or comparable to what a Tesla costs.
Just drove cross-country in a Model X with no problems finding Superchargers or destination charging. It is a comfortable long-distance driving machine.
Lots of people are claiming there are other superior EVs, but I'm not seeing it.
Consumer Reports has been backpedaling on Tesla model ratings ever since they got roasted a few years back by awarding the Model S 103 overall points.
