what sad songs get you through?

I lost a friend tonight, one who’d battled addiction for a while. Last I checked they were ok, this came as sort of a shock. I wish I’d been more perceptive, and done more. Shit.
Listening to sad songs the one I’ve got on repeat now is Jesus etc by Wilco

One of the songs played live at my brother Pat's funeral service... Pat had been left a quadriplegic by a drunk driver when he was but 16 years of age... he lived 13 more years only. He was more than my brother, he was my confidant and my best friend, and I miss him as much to this day as to the day he passed. He left us 26 years ago this past December 6th, on my fathers birthday. I had the lyrics published on a memorial card gifted to all who loved him, and I tweaked the lyrics just a bit...

"Fly on fly home, fly home my friend, go on, go home... go home and walk again.."

An eagle is engraved on his headstone with these same lyrics.

I can't begin to tell you how touched I am that you too love this song, and the incomparable SRV. Thank you for posting this.

This song makes me weep every single time.

It is so beautiful and there could be no better song to play at a funeral. I am so very sorry for your loss of your dear brother, Pat, and on your Dad's birthday too.

It is a beautiful thing that this was played at his funeral and good that we are still alive to feel the pain that we feel with this song -and to remember.

I think you will it find comforting at this time. It is one of the most beautiful songs written, I believe, after her fiancee was killed in a boating accident. The monks chorus in the beginning which opens up to the beautiful piano and of course her voice, is simply magnificent. I had it played for my fiancee when he too was killed, in a motor cycle accident. People at the service said it gave them goose bumps.

It is called 'Dante's Prayer'. I hope you like it.

“Roses at the End of Time”
Words and music Eliza Gilkyson
GilkySongs BMI 2010

Winding down to the end of the line
And the falling of the curtain
I’ll be yours and you’ll be mine
Of that one truth I’m certain
I will give you roses fair
For every secret you did share
For all your words that flowed like wine
Roses at the end of time

Tonight I bless the hands of fate
That brought you to my doorway
Weary, worn and worth the wait
So willing to explore me
One rose for every vow you kept
One for every tear you wept
For all the moments you were kind
Roses at the end of time

One rose for every dream you dared
One for every wrong repaired
For all that bound your heart mine
Roses at the end of time
Roses ...

31. Or, A Row of Small Trees...(lyrics only)
Tue Dec 11, 2012, 02:09 AM
Dec 2012

By Garnet Rogers:

A Row Of Small Trees

Her rings still held her warmth
As they fell to his hand
The doctor said, "there's no more we could do"
And he was worried at first that he did not understand
But then he saw his fist close
So he knew

And we watched from the window
As he walked slowly outside
He seemed unsure as to which way to go
And his coat whipped his legs
As the traffic blew by
He had one shoulder raised
As though to ward off a blow

And he lay in their bedroom
Those first sleepless nights
Too restless to sleep and too tired to cry
And he'd wander downstairs
In the pale morning light
To stare at the horizon with unseeing eyes

His neighbours worried about him
Those first desperate weeks
He seemed to dwindle and shrink in his clothes
And in the evenings
He'd wander the hills by himself
To return as the morning sun rose

The grass shook and swayed in the meadow
As he stood in the night
And he heard the dry whisper of leaves
And the wind was her spirit
Running free through the grass
Whispering warm in his ear "don't you grieve"

He was seen kneeling last Friday
On a high windswept hill
And his white hair blew back in the breeze
And we thought he was praying
Or had taken a fall
But he was planting a row of small trees

Dec 2012

Keep a fire burning in your eye
Pay attention to the open sky
You never know what will be coming down
I don't remember losing track of you
You were always dancing in and out of view
I must have thought you'd always be around
Always keeping things real by playing the clown
Now you're nowhere to be found

I don't know what happens when people die
Can't seem to grasp it as hard as I try
It's like a song I can hear playing right in my ear
That I can't sing
I can't help listening
And I can't help feeling stupid standing 'round
Crying as they ease you down
'Cause I know that you'd rather we were dancing
Dancing our sorrow away
(Right on dancing)
No matter what fate chooses to play
(There's nothing you can do about it anyway)

Just do the steps that you've been shown
By everyone you've ever known
Until the dance becomes your very own
No matter how close to yours
Another's steps have grown
In the end there is one dance you'll do alone

Keep a fire for the human race
Let your prayers go drifting into space
You never know what will be coming down
Perhaps a better world is drawing near
And just as easily it could all disappear
Along with whatever meaning you might have found
Don't let the uncertainty turn you around
(The world keeps turning around and around)
Go on and make a joyful sound

Into a dancer you have grown
From a seed somebody else has thrown
Go on ahead and throw some seeds of your own
And somewhere between the time you arrive
And the time you go
May lie a reason you were alive
But you'll never know

Bridge Over Troubled Waters (a song from our time together) was all I could think of. I quoted the passage "Sail on, silver girl, sail on by...oh, if you need a friend, I'm sailing right behind." at her memorial service.

But I see her grown kids and their kids and I realize that she goes on in them and it gives me comfort.

- I'm sorry for your loss.

He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother. ~ By Donnie Hathaway

The road is long,
with many a winding turn.
That leads us to who - knows where,
who knows where.
But I am strong enough,
to carry him.
He ain’t heavy,
he’s my brother.

So on we go,
his welfare is my concern.
No burden is he - to bear,
we’ll get there.
For I know - he will not,
encumber me.
He ain’t heavy,
he my brother.

If I’m laden at all,
I’m laden with sadness,
That everyone’s heart,
is not filled with gladness,
and love,
for one another.

I said its a long,
I said its a long,
hey, its a long hard road.
From which there is no return,
while we’re on our way - to bear,
why not share?

And the load - doesn’t weigh,
doesn’t weigh me down at all.
He ain’t heavy,
he’s my brother,
he’s my brother, yes he is.
He ain’t heavy,
he ain’t heavy, yeah.
He’s my brother.

THE PARTING GLASS

Oh all the money that e'er I spent
I spent it in good company
And all the harm that e'er I've done
alas, it was to none but me
For all I've done for want of wit
to memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
good night and joy be with you all

Oh all the comrades that e'er I had
they are sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
they would wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call
good night and joy be with you all

Then:

“Long Black Limosine” sung by O. C. Smith on the “Hickory Holler’s Tramp” album which I have and just typed the lyrics up for this post. If you’ve never heard him sing, you must. Reading the lyrics doesn't begin to touch the mournfulness of this song. I read that Elvis did a great version, too.

There’s a long line of mourners
Driving down our little street,
Their fancy cars are such a sight to see.
There are all of your rich friends
Who knew you in the city
And now they finally brought you home to me.

Now when you left you told me
Some day you’d be returning
In a fancy car for all the town to see.
Now everyone is watching you
You finally got your dream
And you’re riding in a long black limosine.

You know the paper told of how you lost your life,
The party and the fatal crash that night;
The race upon the highway, the curve you didn’t see.
Oh! and now you’re in that long black limosine.

Through the tears in my eyes I watch as you ride by,
A chauffeur at the wheel dressed up so fine.
I’ll never love another, my heart and all my dreams
Are with you in that long black limosine.

Honorable mentions:

Kris Kristopherson, "Billy Dee" ("We just called it crucified when Billy he OD'ed&quot and "Epitaph (Black & Blue)" said to be about Janis.

Maybelle Carter & the Carter Family, "Will the Roses Bloom in Heaven?" and "Hello, Central, Give Me Heaven (for I know My Mother's There)" bring goose bumps and memories of sitting in my grandmother's lap while she sang similar songs to me in her thin, reedy voice - so much like Mama Maybelle's.

Pretty soon you'll be able to remember her
Lying in the garden singing
Right where she'll always be
The door is always open

This is the place that I loved her
And these are the friends that she had
Long may the mountain ring
To the sound of her laughter
And she goes on and on

In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
'till we see her once again
In a world without end
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/c/crowded+house/she+goes+on_20034443.html ]
We owe it all to frank sinatra
The song was playing a she walked into the room
After the long weekend
They were a lifetime together

Appearing in the eyes of children
In the clear blue mountain view
The colouring in the sky
And painting ladders to heaven
And she goes on

In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
'till we see her once again
In a world without end

In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
And I always will remember
In a world without end
She goes on
She goes on
She goes on
