what sad songs get you through?
I lost a friend tonight, one who’d battled addiction for a while. Last I checked they were ok, this came as sort of a shock. I wish I’d been more perceptive, and done more. Shit.
Listening to sad songs the one I’ve got on repeat now is Jesus etc by Wilco

One of the songs played live at my brother Pat's funeral service... Pat had been left a quadriplegic by a drunk driver when he was but 16 years of age... he lived 13 more years only. He was more than my brother, he was my confidant and my best friend, and I miss him as much to this day as to the day he passed. He left us 26 years ago this past December 6th, on my fathers birthday. I had the lyrics published on a memorial card gifted to all who loved him, and I tweaked the lyrics just a bit...
"Fly on fly home, fly home my friend, go on, go home... go home and walk again.." 
An eagle is engraved on his headstone with these same lyrics.
I can't begin to tell you how touched I am that you too love this song, and the incomparable SRV. Thank you for posting this.

I think you will it find comforting at this time. It is one of the most beautiful songs written, I believe, after her fiancee was killed in a boating accident. The monks chorus in the beginning which opens up to the beautiful piano and of course her voice, is simply magnificent. I had it played for my fiancee when he too was killed, in a motor cycle accident. People at the service said it gave them goose bumps.

My favorite of his, always gets to me. I am so sorry, bench scientist. I'm in recovery, so I also know. Someone has to be ready and there's nothing you can do if they aren't. Two of the people I was closest to in the program, looked up to when I first joined and supported me, have gone back out and all I can do is let them know that I'll be waiting to welcome them when and if they decide to come back.
My heart breaks for you. Hang in there. You're not alone.
My thoughts are with you as well.
