NYT: After decades of rising childhood obesity rates, several American cities are reporting their first declines. The trend has emerged in big cities like New York and Los Angeles, as well as smaller places like Anchorage, Alaska, and Kearney, Neb. The state of Mississippi has also registered a drop, but only among white students.
Its been nothing but bad news for 30 years, so the fact that we have any good news is a big story, said Dr. Thomas Farley, the health commissioner in New York City, which reported a 5.5 percent decline in the number of obese schoolchildren from 2007 to 2011.
The drops are small, just 5 percent here in Philadelphia and 3 percent in Los Angeles. But experts say they are significant because they offer the first indication that the obesity epidemic, one of the nations most intractable health problems, may actually be reversing course.
I applaud you My Very First Lady, Thank you so much for all you have given us!

(11,464 posts)and thank you Mike Bloomberg in NYC, the mayor during the time period talked about above.
and thanks to Jerry Brown in California and yes, Arnold too for stressing fitness.
people make fun of Mike Bloomberg's soda ban.But people didn't realize why he was doing it.
Calling him names, hating him, not understanding that putting out in the open and publicizing has helped lead to awareness that 48 ounces is not needed in a 15 minute fast food meal.
And that saving 100-200 calories a meal is a start to wellness
and that for everyone who takes a proactive approach, it lowers medical bills, and that the poorest in society are the ones with the least medical care, so helping oneself leads to a big savings of money.

(5,756 posts)When I was a kid what is now a "small" soda just about everywhere was a "large" or "extra-large" soda. There was no option to "supersize" anything because we didn't need to.
I just love the First Lady. It disappoints me she's still taking crap for trying to promote people making better choices to improve their health and that she had the audacity to plant a garden at the White House so they could have fresh vegetables. I grew up on a farm. The vegetables we got out of our garden were always, always far superior in quality and taste than anything you can buy at a grocery store.
I really miss my mom's canned green beans we used to eat through the winter after growing season was over. They were so good.
I love seeing so many urban gardens springing up - so to speak.

Have fun.
