(21,875 posts)Compassionate Conservatives do exist.
Wead contended that the policies of Republican conservatives should be motivated by compassion, not protecting the status quo. He declared himself to be "a bleeding heart conservative," meaning that he cared for people and sincerely believed that a free marketplace was better for the poor.

(21,875 posts)I personally know compassionate conservatives. Investigate who (aside from the government) is feeding the hungry, clothing the poor and sheltering the homeless in your area. I expect, you will find compassionate conservatives at work. Whether it is the "Salvation Army," the Y, Habitat for Humanity, dozens of other organizations or individual churches who provide free meals.
Jimmy Carter was a compassionate conservative:
Half a century ago, a big question regarding Jimmy Carter was, What does born again mean?
ReRe
(12,189 posts)But wouldn't you agree that a majority of republicans have latched onto the term, when there isn't a compassionate bone in their bodies? Those are the "compassionate" conservatives I was speaking of.

(21,875 posts)Other phrases which may sound like oxymorons, but which arent: Democratic-Republican, Liberal-Conservative, Republican-Socialist.
In my opinion, todays MAGA movement, is not Compassionate, Conservative, or even Republican.
ReRe
(12,189 posts)but I imagine I am much older than you. I think I first heard the term "compassionate conservative" during the George H.W. Bush years. I later learned that there didn't seem to be a compassionate bone in any Republican. The only compassion I heard tell of was out of the Democratic Party. Compassion. It just sounds "socialist", don't ya know. That's where I was coming from.
I totally agree with your summation of the Maga movement, BTW.

(7,795 posts)Knew he came in on a student visa but never graduated. Didn't know he didn't even show up at all!
And an H1B is a work visa, not a student visa, i believe. For a long while... like a decade or two... we IT types were losing our jobs to these people, many of whom we had to train for our positions if we hoped to get any kind of severance. I, personally, have no love lost for these people. If jobs had been made for them, that would have been one thing... but telling us we weren't as good as, or as smart as, these immigrants, and then having to train these smart people in what and how we do our jobs just really stuck in the craw.
And yet, beyond that, Elon can't even tell the truth about a lie everyone knows.
Guess this puts him on the opposite side of thought front T on deportation. This ought to be fun to watch! Now... where's that Potus Elon and VP Trump meme. With Elon flexing his muscles acting like a king, now is the time to start posting it everywhere multiple times a day, IMO.

They both had to train foreigners brought in take their jobs from them.
It was extremely traumatic for them because Motorola was like a city unto itself. All their socialization revolved around people from work. There wasn't much else around. I think it was in AZ.
What really frosted their asses though was when the immigrants they were training would say demeaning things directly to them about Americans in a snarky way, as if goading them.
I'm sure Motorola assured the immigrants nobody would hurt their fefes, & anyone who did would be terminated immediately.
Fucking sickening.
So you have my sympathy for what you had to live through.

(1,945 posts)Looking at if from a different angle, looks as though Putin had his tryst with musk and played trump.
trump is a puppet.
musk doesn't want to be president, he wants to be king of the world...anyway he can...at least the west, half of Europe, South America, Australia and Vlad gets Asia, Africa (but not Musk's South Africa) and the rest of Europe...until Putin is no longer needed, like trump. But trump's too stupid and egotistical to see or accept this. And with Putin's help, musk'll get there unless SOMEONE decides to...
But we need to remember one important thing - there will ALWAYS be those who will willingly do whatever musk wants (jus like Nazi Germany - need I say it?) thinking they will be in his good graces and left alone. Mores the pity. We need to know who those people are before things get worse.

(12,600 posts)In early 2001, Elon Musk met Robert Zubrin and donated $100,000 to his Mars Society, joining its board of directors for a short time.[13]: 3031 He gave a plenary talk at their fourth convention where he announced Mars Oasis, a project to land a greenhouse and grow plants on Mars.[14][15] Musk initially attempted to acquire a Dnepr launch vehicle for the project through Russian contacts from Jim Cantrell.[16]
Musk returned with his team to Moscow, this time bringing Michael Griffin, who later became the 11th Administrator of NASA, but found the Russians increasingly unreceptive.[17][18] On the flight home, Musk announced he could start a company to build the affordable rockets they needed instead.[18] By applying vertical integration,[17] using inexpensive commercial off-the-shelf components when possible,[18] and adopting the modular approach of modern software engineering, Musk believed SpaceX could significantly cut launch costs.[18]
In early 2002, Elon Musk started to look for staff for his company, soon to be named SpaceX. Musk approached five people for the initial positions at the fledgling company, including Griffin, who declined the position of Chief Engineer,[19]: 11 Jim Cantrell and John Garvey (Cantrell and Garvey would later found the company Vector Launch), rocket engineer Tom Mueller, and Chris Thompson.[19][20] SpaceX was first headquartered in a warehouse in El Segundo, California. Early SpaceX employees, such as Tom Mueller (CTO), Gwynne Shotwell (COO), and Chris Thompson (VP of Operations), came from neighboring TRW and Boeing corporations. By November 2005, the company had 160 employees.[21] Musk personally interviewed and approved all of SpaceX's early employees.[19]: 22
Musk has stated that one of his goals with SpaceX is to decrease the cost and improve the reliability of access to space, ultimately by a factor of ten

Sticking Elon Musk and Donald Trump together in the government will be like putting a wolf, a bobcat, an innocent bystander and a ton of rock in a mesh sack and throwing the sack in the river. The only thing those two assholes have in common is money. Elon Musk is everything Trump hates - Trump hates immigrants he isnt sleeping with, electric cars, renewable energy
- all in the same person. And if Musk is truly interested in government efficiency, which I dont think he is, hell figure out in about 15 minutes that Trump is its biggest impediment

Some lifetimes ago I worked for a large tech company. We had H1Bs there that ran circles around us Americans. They were vastly better educated. A lot worked harder too, though not all.
I don't have sufficient faith that our universities are doing any better than they were back then, and although I'm out of tech, I have friends in tech and similar industries who offer zero good news regarding the current crop of graduating college students.
H1Bs are necessary, IMO. I don't care where genius workers come from as long as they are genius workers. We need the best minds, and if they're not American, so be it. Trump definitely should not be mucking about with this, if that is indeed his plan.
I don't want any American worker displaced, but if someone from somewhere else is more qualified, then I'm game for at least discussing bringing in foreign labor.

But Trump is old and will soon be regarded by all but his most subservient sycophants as a cantankerous old fart. Musk will defend him, of course, but until there's an opening and Musk will then make his move, maybe throw Trump into a protective nursing home environment and then take the actual reins from figurehead "President" Vance . . . with Peter Thiel's cooperation, of course.
