Rep. John Larson (D-CT), who chairs the House Democratic caucus, released a strongly worded statement on Saturday arguing that no action on gun control in the wake of a mass shooting spree in Newtown, Conn. was to be "complicit" in the attacks, the Hartford Courant reports:
Friday was a day of mourning, but the time to act is now upon us, Larson said in a strongly worded statement issued Saturday afternoon.
To do nothing in the face of continuous assaults on our children is to be complicit in those assaults. There may not be a single cure-all for the violence in our nation, however we must start the process and begin the deeper and longer conversations that need to take place.
Politics be damned. Of the 12 deadliest shootings in our nations history, half of them have happened in the last five years. And there is not a single person in America who doesnt fear it will happen again. Its time we recognize the danger and address it, Larson said.

Larson on Gun Control: The Time to Act is Now Upon Us
(snip)
The Democrat who represents the 1st District said Congress should act quickly on bills requiring background checks for all gun sales, closing the terrorist watch list loopholes, and banning assault weapons and high capacity clips.
Those measures dont solve all our problems, but theyre a start, Larson said.
We also need to focus on our mental health care system. We need to support a better process for families and friends to share their concerns and fears with authorities about peoples mental status, and begin to invest in the human infrastructure needed for effective prevention programs that create healthy children. The pattern is clear- action must be taken.
To do nothing in the face of pending disaster is to be complicit. Its time to act. Its time to vote.

(2,091 posts)be done about guns in our country. Everytime there is another shooting, talk begins. Then when the outage dies down, so does the talking. At what point do we actually DO something about controlling these needless killings with assault guns? No one is trying to take away anyone's guns that are used for hunting, but we do need to take away weapons that no civilian needs to have that are more powerful than the military and law enforcement has. WHEN IS ENOUGH GOING TO BE ENOUGH?? The American people are no longer safe going to the mall, the movies, and school. Is that the kind of country we all want to live in? Now is the time to finally stop talking about gun control and actually enforce the laws on the books as well as adding new and stronger gun laws.
