It was less than a week ago I raised the specter of Musk being able to pull money directly from anyones bank accounts. (See: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100220001927)
Looks like they are starting with blue states.

"This morning, my financial team shockingly uncovered that President Trump and his crony Elon Musk illegally executed a revocation of $80 million in congressionally-appropriated FEMA funding from New York City's bank accounts late yesterday afternoon. This is money that the federal government previously disbursed for shelter and services and is now missing. This highway robbery of our funds directly out of our bank account is a betrayal of everyone who calls New York City home.
On Edit: my personal immediate reaction is this will shake the confidence of every citizen for putting their money in the bank. Personally, I am considering acquiring hard assets and opening off shore accounts to avoid this kind of illegal seizure of assets.

Mr.WeRP
(1,098 posts)is form an LLC that has its own business EIN not associated with your SSN and then deposit it an account owned by the LLC with you as the signing authority. However, if you are on the LLC, that account is eventually discoverable as being associated with you. Wealthy people have others do this for them to create tax shelters for their interest/dividend earnings and treat their personal expenses as business expenses for the LLC. This way, they pay no income or gains on the money in the business as long as the business isnt profitable.
Any other routes would be gathering precious metals (gold, silver) and gems and putting them in a safe and maybe burying it in the back yard.
Or, fly to Switzerland or Caymen islands with a suitcase full of money and open bank accounts there.

(727 posts)But transferring from my primary bank (that the federal government would have access to by virtual of direct deposit of tax refunds and ACH payments of taxes) takes a literal week.
Would opening a second checking account at the same, primary bank be a better way to do it? Would transfers be faster?
And would this be easier than changing my account numbers?
Weirdly, while all this was going on, I had to open an ACH dispute with my primary bank after a sketchy debit that I didnt authorize (insurance company - not Musk, lol).
yellow dahlia
(5,544 posts)it, it is pretty much instantaneous.

And someone asked earlier if they would be able to track other accts. I dunno. I felt it was important to limit how much they had access to in my direct deposit acct. We are in such surreal scary times.

I used to have minor accident and life insurance policies that I canceled nearly two years ago during a period of unemployment. It was not a "theft" per se, at least we don't have evidence that Musk put the money in his own pocket. If that is the case, then undoubtedly there could be state charges because this was probably an account at a state chartered bank.
It sounds like it was more a case where Musk's gang went through all the recent disbursements and tried to reverse the ACH on ones in blue states. I believe there is a 5-day window when such a reversal can go through under ACH. So the money should have been sent back to the Federal account that originally disbursed it.
There certainly can be a lawsuit against a private citizen taking such action. There may be laws that spell out the procedures that must be followed. I'm certain the NY lawyers are working hard tonight deciding which court to petition and which statutes to cite.

Every time I go to the bank or the ATM and I see that little FDIC sticker, I wonder how long it's going to be there. So is it time to pull all of our cash out? New York City cannot take this lying down. I call on the Mayor to immediately pursue legal action to ensure the tens of millions of dollars stolen by Trump and DOGE are rightfully returned. If instead Mayor Adams continues to be President Trumps pawn, my Office will request to work in partnership with the New York City Law Department to pursue aggressive legal action.

Everything I have is in different accounts than my Social Security goes in, that account is dedicated to that and that's all. That account is the only account number the government has.[

(5,818 posts)The office of Mayor Eric Adams said on Monday it received two payments from the federal government related to migrant assistance last week totaling over $80.5 million. One payment was for $58.6 million and the other was for $21.9 million, under two tranches of the Shelter and Services Program, city spokesperson Liz Garcia said. The money covered reimbursements for services delivered between November 2023 and October 2024 and included reimbursement for hotels, security, food and other costs. About $19 million in reimbursement claims were for hotel costs, she said.
Garcia said the city has never paid luxury rates for hotels. Thats backed up by a report last year from City Comptroller Brad Lander, who is now running for mayor in a bid to unseat Adams, which showed that the municipal government has paid on average $152 a night for rooms, the vast majority outside Manhattan. Some of the Manhattan rooms were around $200 per night, but thats not a luxury rate. Rates for five-star hotels in Manhattan for this coming weekend run from $400 a night to well over $1,000.
The Shelter and Services Program, also known as SSP, is administered by FEMA in partnership with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023. Congress appropriated $650,000,000 for the program in fiscal year 2024 to provide financial support to nonfederal entities. Of that, $640.9 million was to support sheltering and related activities provided by non-Federal entities, in support of relieving overcrowding in short-term holding facilities of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The remaining $9.1 million was for FEMAs administrative costs.
Four federal employees FEMAs chief financial officer, two program analysts and a grant specialist were fired Tuesday over the payments to reimburse New York City, Department of Homeland Security officials said. The workers are accused of circumventing leadership to make the transactions. Officials did not give details on how the four had violated any policies.
