I think its sad most folks don't have the long view to realize the GOOD FORTUNE of a Gingrich nom.

DID SOMEONE SAY CANCER??? ROLL ON THE Newt Gingrich TRAIN! * noooot * NOOOOOOOT *

A man who is willing to race-bait like this can't win in the general:

Preaching Division in South Carolina
Published: January 17, 2012 (NYT)

By mixing falsehoods with racial condescension, Newt Gingrich brought a raucous presidential debate crowd to its feet on Monday night in South Carolina, further cheapening his reputation and that of the state Republican Party.

For months, Mr. Gingrich has made racial resentment an integral part of his platform as a conservative challenger to Mitt Romney. He has traversed the country calling President Obama “the greatest food-stamp president in American history” and presenting African-Americans with the great revelation that they should prefer paychecks to federal handouts. When he was called on it at the debate by Juan Williams of Fox News, he took the measure of the crowd and doubled down.

“The fact is that more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history,” he announced, to wild cheers. “I know among the politically correct, you’re not supposed to use facts that are uncomfortable.” What you’re not supposed to do, actually, is mislead the public.

----

I hope his whole campaign is like this, I really do. Especially the part about wanting to make 13 year olds become janitors. Nothing could be healthier for the American people to have this debate, instead of the Wall Street debate big business wants Obama to have with his Wall Street-designated successor, Romney.

They've already engineered Romney to beat Obama in the fall by simple electoral math alone. Nothing could upset their plans (to kill Occupy and ruin Obama's presidency by a repeat of the 2000 election) more than a Gingrich candidacy.

the choice is apparently going to be between Mr. Romney and Mr. Gingrich. Democrats win either way. Either we get a man who is apparently runing for Emperor of the United States (rather than President) or a fine, upstanding representative of the ruling classes.

Think what Mr. Gingrich has said during the primary race so far: he will arrest "activist" judges, he will ignore the Supreme Court, he will put school children to work cleaning schools, and he will abolish Obamacare. We couldn't ask for a more confident candidate for dictator. Without even mentioning Mr. Gingrich's private life, any halfway intelligent opponent can destroy him with his own words.

And Mr. Romney, bless his heart. In this time of never-ending recession, Mr. Romney just came by his money the wrong way. It's too late for him to have made his money in any way that's recognizable to the 99% of us who are paying for the mistakes of the 1%.

We Democrats, we're sitting pretty

You could be a genius with an IQ that's off the charts. But, if you cast your vote on one of those black box electronic voting machines, and it gets hacked, it won't make one iota of difference how smart you are. The same goes for showing up at the polling place and being told that your ID is not adequate, or that you were scrubbed from the rolls altogether. Or, your republican state elections chairman sees to it that your precinct gets 10 voting machines when it needs 30, and you don't have time to spend standing in line for 4 hours, because you'll lose your job if you don't show up.

I always have to remind myself that Al Gore won the total vote count by half a million votes. There are more "not-stupid" people in this country than stupid people. It was because of the things I just listed, among other things, that gave that first election to Shit-for-Brains, as well as the 2004 election. And, things are even worse now in those regards.

Most Americans find him as palatable as Obama despite being the very definition of the Wall Street 1% (not to mention one of the architects of the mandated private insurance most Americans claim to be upset over). His election, or even a close race, would signal (even if it really just meant American ignorance and interest in surface appearances) an America willing to reject everything the Occupy movement stands for.

Sorry, but I'm a bit of a dreamer and like the concept of two honorable and worthy people arguing ideas and the future of the country. I'm also old enough to remember Eisenhower and Stevenson, possibly the last time that happened.

We managed to survive Nixon and Reagan and we barely survived the Shrub. How low do we have to go to see who can finally destroy the country from the White House? Do we want to be remembered in history as the great nation too stupid to keep what we built?

Whoever runs against Obama has a chance, however small, of winning, and that's a chance I can't see for the likes of Gingrich. I'm no fan of Romney, but of the remaining clowns he's the only one I wouldn't faint dead away at the thought of giving the keys to.

and he thought that Poland was not under Soviet domination in 1976, but at least the debates and campaign of 1976 were, as you say, genteel, and they did tend to focus on real issues. And even when a group of demonstrators disrupted a speech by Hubert Humphrey in September 1976, shouting "Israel must live! Carter must go!", Humphrey waited patiently for several minutes before asking them to stop.

But I'm very much afraid we'll see the opposite happen.

I.e. Obama and Romney competing to win the 53% crowd by adopting RW memes and narrow electoral politics.

Romney saw McCain run an honorable election against Obama, don't forget. We got that four years ago, more or less...

Running against Gingrich would practically make Gingrich the new face of the Tea Party, galvanizing independent minded folk (including sections of the right) against him. It'd be a Wallace campaign.
