Images of "Enola Gay," the aircraft that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima in Japan are among those targeted by the U.S. military in an initiative to eliminate content related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
They are among a number of photos unrelated to DEI that have been mistakenly flagged, including those from an Army Corps of Engineers dredging project in California, seemingly because an engineer in the image had the last name "Gay."

(3,325 posts)... if it wasn't a jaw-dropping example of staggering stupidity.
There is a tiny village in Vermont called Gaysville. It was named for the brothers Gay, not the gay bothers. There are still many of their descendants who share the surname, who I'm sure have suffered crude jokes at their expense. I know that certain social platforms will scold those who mention the name of the village in any context for perceived bigotry, no matter how misinformed said platform may be.
AI is not unlike a toddler with a loaded gun. What could go wrong?
Edit to add: Anyone who is opposed to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is a fucking bigot by definition, and should be shunned and ostracized for their obscene inhumanity.

For some context: During WWII, the average soldier was five feet, eight inches tall, and weighed144 pounds. During basic training, which was received at Fort Benning, GA, you gained 5 to 20 pounds and added an inch to your 33 ¼ chest. Obviously, manly men ... but they won the war while our Meal Team 6 can't get out of their Lazy Boy lounges.

(1,975 posts)VT-8 was made up of 15 slow obsolescent torpedo bombers that attacked the Japanese carriers without any fighter support. They were wiped out. Twenty nine pilots and crew died. No hits were made.
Their sacrifice drew in the Japanese fighters down from altitude and opened the way for the dive bombers to make their attacks unhindered. Three Japanese carriers were destroyed. In those few moments the the tide of war in the Pacific turned.
I can not comprehend such bravery.

(1,093 posts)Perhaps if we search out a lot more history we can help it to learn the right things.we can teach it that greed is bad. It might be able to even understand moral concepts if we teach it properly. They arent going to give up on it. But we might be able to give it rules it can work by. Do it now in the learning stage. It might be what keeps it from trying to destroy us eventually.

But to fully appreciate the absurdity of the GOPs Ctrl-F problem, consider this amazing report from The Associated Press.
References to a World War II Medal of Honor recipient, the Enola Gay aircraft that dropped an atomic bomb on Japan and the first women to pass Marine infantry training are among the tens of thousands of photos and online posts marked for deletion as the Defense Department works to purge diversity, equity and inclusion content, according to a database obtained by The Associated Press. The database, which was confirmed by U.S. officials and published by AP, includes more than 26,000 images that have been flagged for removal across every military branch. But the eventual total could be much higher.
Theres a lot to unpack in the APs report, which has not been independently verified by MSNBC or NBC News, but of particular interest is the way in which the Trump administration reportedly approached photographs of a historically significant airplane.
In some cases, photos seemed to be flagged for removal simply because their file included the word gay, including service members with that last name and an image of the B-29 aircraft Enola Gay, which dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II, the AP reported.
Almost exactly 30 years later, Donald Trumps Pentagon is concerned about images of the airplane, not because of its payload, but because of the word gay.
Perhaps we should be relieved that the Republican administration didnt try to rebrand the plane as Enola Homosexual?
