President Barack Obama is marking the 39th anniversary of the Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade decision by saying that the ruling was more than just about establishing a woman's right to an abortion.
Obama says in a statement that the court's decision also makes clear that the government "should not intrude on private family matters."
The president says he's committed to protecting a woman's right to choose and "this fundamental constitutional right."

Statement by the President on Roe v. Wade Anniversary

As we mark the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we must remember that this Supreme Court decision not only protects a womans health and reproductive freedom, but also affirms a broader principle: that government should not intrude on private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a womans right to choose and this fundamental constitutional right. While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue- no matter what our views, we must stay united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, support pregnant woman and mothers, reduce the need for abortion, encourage healthy relationships, and promote adoption. And as we remember this historic anniversary, we must also continue our efforts to ensure that our daughters have the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams.

Remember Me
(1,532 posts)which is damned discouraging since there is NO GOOD reason public policy should weigh in on whether or not a woman has children, or carries a specific first-trimester pregnancy to term. It makes me FURIOUS to think about the parade of misogynist men through the years who have stomped all over the collective uteruses of the nation's women trying to gain a political foothold. It makes me even MORE FURIOUS to realize how successful they have been in making it so difficult for many women that they don't have the option of an abortion, or have it only at great personal hardship and/or cost. And when I think of those who would allow no "life or health of the mother" and/or no incest or rape exception, I quite simply want to go postal on them (figuratively speaking).
