TEXAS: Legislator to propose "school marshalls"

“I’m actually trying to increase and heighten the standards and certifications by which someone could have a firearm on school grounds,” he said.

But Villalba said the so-called school marshals would go through a “heightened level of training” that would go “well beyond” that required for a concealed handgun license.

He said his bill would expand the law enforcement personnel at schools by essentially deputizing certain faculty members as armed peace officers during extreme scenarios such as an active shooter situation.

Villalba also clarified that the weapons would be stored under lock and key somewhere in the school or carried by school officials who don’t interact with children on a regular basis.

“You couldn’t have a third-grade teacher who has a holstered .45,” he said. “That’s not the idea.”

Sounds like a good idea to me. It would provide a well trained first responder on site who could very quickly respond to a school rampage shooting while it was starting. Possibly it could even deter some school rampage shootings completely.

It would be cheaper than hiring armed guards and just as effective. Give the faculty volunteers a pay raise for the extra duty.

the devil is in the details... and those details could be especially problematic after the righties screw with the basic ideas in the legislative process.
