Islamic center hosts prayer vigil for Newtown

HAMDEN — Muslims of the Abdul-Majid Karim Hasan Islamic Center held a Sunday prayer vigil for the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School and offered warm condolences to the families and entire community of Newtown.

“We are praying people and believe in the power of prayer,” said Abdul-Majid Karim Hasan, resident imam of the center. “We believe that prayer is the most powerful force known to man and today’s prayer vigil was an effort to provide strength and support to all in Newtown.”

In light of the tragic events, where gunman Adam Lanza, 20, went on a shooting spree, taking the lives of 28 people including himself, members of the Muslim congregation had the opportunity to weigh in before the start of Sunday’s vigil.

“We need to ask Allah for protection all the time because we never know when something like this may happen to us or our children,” said Aliyah Amin. “We want to watch our environment and the people around us.”

Mikkel Leslie, 12, said strict gun rules can be a help in the future.

“I think it’s unfortunate and I do believe we need to have strict gun rules to help keep people from buying guns and doing things like this,” he said. “I don’t know what I would have done if that were to happen in my class,” Mikkel said, who is a student at Hamden Middle School.

....

“This is what we are supposed to do as a Muslim community and as people of faith,” said Mike Hasan. “It’s tragic that a situation like this would happen in a school where our children would be, so we are here today extending our sincere support for the families of the victims,”

Those one the right might be surprised than not all muslims are terrorists.

Those on the the left that not all gun owners are killers.

Meeting somewhere in the middle, listening, discussing, and labeling all based on what some do can get us a lot further than hate and fear.
