is that we are talking about decreasing the future yearly increase in inflation based changes to SS and SSI.
I'm not saying I like it, as a matter of fact, I don't particularly care for this proposed change because I receive disability now. But I think people, via some of the posts here about this, are looking at this as a cut in present payments from SS and SSI.
Now I have always thought that the Consumer Price Index is far too broad of an index to really know how inflation impacts people at different times in their life.
For instance, a person on disability would probably have higher costs for medicine as well as medical devices. That is true for me as my drugs and other devises and doctor bills take more than half of my benefit.
I just want to point that out.

(36,286 posts)assume that people will start cutting their pills in half to extend their prescriptions when the price goes up!
Given that health care is a major driver in inflation, I think you are correct in thinking that the market basket for seniors may need to be adjusted to reflect their typical costs.

(19,877 posts)Why we as a Nation would even THINK of cutting a dime for those who are already struggling to survive is mind-boggling. It's not as if the rich are just 'getting by', they are doing remarkably well hoarding the Nations wealth. The middle class & poor do all the hard work/labor in our country & fight all of our wars, now it's time for the rich to sacrifice something, anything for our Nation.

(31,849 posts)the Chained CPI model used is the Chained CPI-E. http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251264891
But you are quite right ... decrease in future yearly increase versus Present elimination of U/C payments, Present ending of child-care subsidies for the working poor, Present ending of Homeless (near homeless) programming.
That is what this fiscal cliff negotiation is boiling down to.
