by Jed Lewison
Earlier Wednesday, President Obama said Republicans should support his effort to avoid the fiscal cliff because he's already made significant compromises, meeting them "at least halfway."
<...>
Then, less than two hours after the president's plea for compromise, John Boehner essentially offered up his middle finger in response, saying that on Thursday, House Republicans will pass his "Plan B" to extend Bush tax cuts for everyone earning up to $1 million per year and that if President Obama refuses to support it, he "will be responsible for the biggest tax increase in American history."
<...>
So in case you were wondering what you get in exchange for offering up Social Security benefit cuts and extending Bush tax cuts to $400,000, now you have your answer.

I agree with Kos.
Update: Sheesh, why didn't Obama say something like, "I made a more than fair deal. The GOP rejected it. So now I'm pulling the offer off the table and waiting to see what the GOP has to offer. Clock's ticking!" Instead, the GOP will bank the concessions he's already made, then demand more. Rinse. Lather. Repeat.

The President should definitely pull his offer and return to his original proposal: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021905787
Anything less is unacceptable. Anything involving cuts to Social Security benefits is cruel and indefensible.

(2,921 posts)And Republicans will be the one responsible for the tax increase. They own it now.
And we'll be demanding more to forever protect SS, including a real-life COLA adjustment effective immediately to adjust for the cost of living on a quarterly basis. To ensure that everyone is covered, the cap for SS needs to be removed.

(14,400 posts)I don't think you yet understand the difference in the term "plea" taken from the author of an article in relation to your usage of the word "pleading" directly attributed to the President in the subject line of your reply.
Please continue your studies I am hopeful that you will find it fruitful in the future.
Best of luck in your continuing effort to overcome illiteracy.

(11,464 posts)but it's easy to be Howard Dean- he is not in office, and can afford to say anything he likes.
I looked, and nope, he never made the Presidency either on my placemat of the Presidents.
You all do realize that all the ones that speak out the loudest in office, are doing so, most of them with the president's full acceptance and knowledge prehand.
It is all a game after all.
And that is the way it plays. (And I include Sanders in that statement, as I did Kucinich in prior times).
It is what negotiation is.
BTW-it is like contract negotiations, unless arbitration is done. Back and forth and meet somewhere

If Boehner accepts the deal, there is a deal. The President needs to know that cutting Social Security is unacceptable.
He should listen to the outcry, to the American people, to the logic he once espoused, and withdraw the offer or alter it to remove Social Security from the negotiations.

(11,464 posts)We should be focused on that being that now is the time to act on that
But there are only a couple of hours left to make a deal

...learn to walk and chew gum at the same time. The notion that the welfare of seniors is any less important is absurd.
In both instances, people's lives are at stake.

This is a capitalist economy run by neoliberal corporatists, everything but the money is a distraction.
No, we can't walk and chew gum at the same time as evidenced to where we are and were we are going, falling further behind by the day.

(546 posts)How can you negotiate on one side while the other is sprouting this nonsense?
If Obama has a weakness it is in his devotion to 'bipartisanship' in the face of mutineers.
Yes, Barak ... sometimes you have to defeat your opponent.
Winning an election is not winning anything, really, it only gets you into the game.
Now, play to win. Just like they are doing.
