Leave it to the dogs… a heartwarming story comes out of Texas about a Great Pyrenees called Duke and a puppy named Rudy. Rudy, an 8-week-old Labrador-mix was left tied outside at the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) the evening of December 2nd. He chewed his way out of the leash and decided to break into the shelter!

“People don’t want to wait till the office opens, so they just leave them,” said Peggy Brown, Humane Education and Community Outreach at HSNT.

Security footage showed this determined pup pacing back and forth in front of the shelter’s fence. Once he freed himself of his tether, he could be seen scrambling into the shelter. Not that difficult a task for a pup that weighs only about 5 pounds. Sorry to say, but security footage not being filmed in HD, the great escape won’t be making it on to YouTube.


Duke, the Great Pyrenees

The little fellow was found by staff the next morning curled up and sleeping with Duke, an 85-pound, 13-month-old dog who had been surrendered to the shelter. It appears as if the puppy – who got his name from a staff member named Rudy — walked halfway through the row of dogs before selecting Duke to cozy up to. Rudy was able to squiggle into Duke’s cage and the two became a team. I wonder if Rudy saw a bit of his mom in Duke’s coloring, perhaps?

3. Awwww! What a sweet little pup and how sweet of Duke to let him cuddle up with him for the night!

I so hope these two sweethearts get a nice loving home for Christmas!
