A new location for bicycles competitions would have to be built because the original one has been modified to host for exotic animals and plants (called the BioDome).
All the other locations are still operational except for the Montreal Forum, now a cinema and restaurants upgraded building, but the NHL Canadiens venue is available as a replacement.
Besides... effing criminal ICEholes are nowhere to be seen around the city...

Anyone who isnt a US citizen isnt safe here, many tourists and visitors are being detained just trying to get into the country. The detention and deportation stories are horrific.

(7,448 posts)Albeit a dyed in the wool democrat, and moreover on the progressive side of that equation I don't feel safe either.
Patricia is a citizen, I believe. Her opinion after seeing the reprehensible acts officials and maga citizens both have performed, I believe she is worthy of her opinion. The fact she and her family are a celeb dynasty only gives her media attention neither you nor I can get. More power to anyone who can speak and be heard in these times. And I agree with her. The Olympics should be pulled. It would not be without precedent, and in the same fashion as the other times I'm thinking of. Tourists should not step foot in our country nor spend even a penny until the US grows up enough to join civilization again.

(7,448 posts)I'm Pagan, ask me if I feel safe to practice my religion as the Xtians in this country practice theirs, especially in this region. Last year, I lost my best friend, a gay male who had stood with me as a divine couple during our worship. Our group is based more on energies than outward appearances, and so we often stood at the altar in a "mixed up" union as some who visited us declared. But I've always had more of what we considered male attributes... quick decisions to issues and problems, overt assertiveness, not exactly maternal in nature (unless it was to our critter friends)... Jim, OTOH, was the gentlest of souls I'd ever met; nurturing, balancing, and gods, how I miss him in my life.
Between my spiritual path and the fact I'm a woman... and don't exactly exude that "feminism" of submissiveness so deemed to be our overriding trait, I'm trying to stay in the background as much as possible now. But things are coming to a head, both out there in the world and within me. Something has to break. We're building to a peak of action; I just don't know what form that action will take. That silly little optimist that still holds a piece of my heart, tells me it'll be people finally making the magas and the other haters to descend back into the holes they once hid within. That good can overcome evil. But then, there are those other days.... (sigh)

(7,448 posts)on Reddit once upon a time and saved, I found it so beautiful. I offer it to you, a prayer as appropriate to these times. It's a far tread down the path I started on when I was in my late teens...
O the fiercest!
Magnanimous, all-transcending Lady of Terrifying Countenance
In this moment of divine inspiration, under the permeating glow of blessed Mousai
I call upon Your ancient name, the most ferocious one:
Hekate Brimo! Hekate Brimo! Brimo! Brimo! Fiery Brimo!
O roaring conqueror of the abyss, the most manifested one, ten-headed Daughter of Zeus Areios
Your legs are those of the wolf ready to strike down its prey
Yet Your prey is the stagnant force of Darkness itself
Even as You are in Your holy rage wise men never call You "the Beast"
For You are Apotropaios, the reasonable
And You are Kratais, ruthless but wise
And You are the ungirt Daughter of Perses, whom Hesiod profound honored himself
O ravaging Brimo, I prostrate before You
But in adoration of You and in reverence for You
Hekate Brimo, the burning, the most visible, the invisible, without belt
Hear me through the crackling of Your Holy Fires
With these offerings which I give to You release me from apathy, may it burn and smoulder like howling Klythios did
Release me from the infectious ignorance, unspool the serpentine thread of the cunning Moirai, O Arkyia
You are the source, the bridge, the wide outfall
You complete what is incomplete
You lay out the road for His wisdom, eternal and omnipotent
You are celestial and You are magmatic
You are the beginning, the end and the in-between
You alone rule all
IAO Hekate Brimo!
IAO, Perseia!

It's such hard work. Heck, I've participated (as a scores-recording official) in these competitions, and even the ones where high school students give their all for a high school-level inter-school competition. They work like dogs! Sometimes on a daily basis. Actually, MOSTLY on a daily basis. (59,771 posts)We are flying to the USA. We will be landing at an airport where we havent had a problem. Actually, my wife has never had a problem except in Atlanta. The CBP guy, himself an immigrant, detained her because he said that her fingerprints didnt match the ones they had on file. Since we knew that she had not had her fingers switched since the last time she was in the USA, the CBP guy was full of shit, but he had her detained for an hour. CBPs superior officers apologized an hour later, and said she was free to go.
We have no reason to think they will detain a 73 year old German visitor with a return ticket, and who is married to a US citizen who is traveling with her. However, it seems to us that many, if not most, of the people detained recently were detained unjustly, so there doesnt necessarily need to be a legitimate reason to do it. Well know by Friday evening.
Be safe.
DFW
(59,771 posts)We will never ever again take American Airlines, so our safety and that of our luggage should get a boost there. As for the US CPB guys, that's pretty much a crap shoot. If it's someone who has done the job for years and knows what he/she is doing, their screen will show that we always come to the States about this time of year, and stay between 5 and 8 weeks, and as long as my wife's ESTA is still valid (it is until next year), we should sail through.
When I flew over in April, since I was by myself, I went into the line for US citizens. Just before me, there were three people traveling together. two of them appeared to speak no English, as the third one seemed to be translating for them. The CPB guy was clearly annoyed, he made a gesture to me to not approach, and I made a "no problem" gesture back. It took a few minutes, but another CPB guy arrived to cart the three people away. I just waited, and he seemed to appreciate my lack of hurry. I did the retina scan thing, and he just asked if I had any food. I said, no, I did this too often to make that mistake. He just smiled, said, welcome home, and waved me on.
My wife, usually the epitome of composure and grace, does not like to be kept waiting in line, and I sometimes have to talk her down. She is used to dealing with uncaring German bureaucrats who treat non-bureaucrats as irritants they are forced to deal with against their will. I remind her that she has to keep cool with people that have the power to shove her right back on the plane she came in on. She usually gets it. One time, she was visiting a girlfriend who lives in Vermont on the Canadian border. They just walked across. On the way back, she was checked by some idiot CBP guy who couldn't find her entry stamp from a month before. He only saw one from the past May, when we were in Washington for my nephew's college graduation. He asked when she was going home, and calculated (from the May stamp, not the July stamp that he missed) that she was overstaying her 90 days visa-free by one day. Rather than point out his incompetence, she went into her ignorant foreigner mode, and said, Oh, you are so right! I gave you the date of my arrival, but as you know, flights from here to Europe are overnight, so they leave the day before. He said, that's better, and let her in.
Being safe these days starts with being careful, and we certainly intend to be that. There are always a few hotheads in every plane, and we are perfectly content to let them draw all the negative attention to themselves, meanwhile being nice and docile, ourselves. Being a southerner, I can, if I need to, convincingly put on the "yes, sir" accent of a former drill sergeant, and that usually does it.
Once, in Boston, after the security check, when my beard was browner and I was leaner, some TSA guy came up to me and told me I had "been randomly designated for a further security check." Random, my ass, but whatever. He was expecting some anger or frustration on my part. Instead, I went into my former southern drill sergeant mode, acted as if the whole thing had been my idea in the first place, and said, "alright, sir, let's get it done!" He was so unprepared for that reaction, that he ran a hand up one of my legs, said thank you, and got lost. The "random further security check" lasted about two and a half seconds. I don't look the part, and that is something I can't change, but I can sound the part, and that is usually enough. After all, in Boston, they just KNOW what Southerners are supposed to sound like, don't they?

I have nothing to prove save for my citizenship - I just cooperate. One agent said "This has happened to you before?" As I wearily went through the proper motions for wand searching, basically before they even asked. I just nodded.

(59,771 posts)But that has been the case for a quarter century, now, ever since I got my first computer.
Like Europe's socialist regimes, I think that they, too will drown in their sea of information. The socialist countries, notably the relatively compact "German Democratic Republic," informally known as East Germany, needed all the storage space they could grab just to house the files on their citizens. The more oppressive they got, the more their people became "enemies of the state," and the greater their piles of files got. When socialism collapsed, and the people were allowed to see the files the regime kept on them, they were astonished to see the immense amount information that had been collected on every one of them. Many were appalled at seeing how many "IM" (inoffizielle Mitarbeiter--unofficial collaborators) had been collecting information on their every move, every utterance, every friendship made. The people informing the government on them were friends, neighbors, even relatives. It was all in the files. On our way to becoming the Soviet States of America, Stephen Miller and friends have only to follow their socialist role models of recent history. From Soviet-style military parades to mountains of information on private citizens gathered for the sole purpose of harassing, following, and, ultimately arresting or expelling uncomfortable citizens. The SED (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands) regime had their own word for expulsion: "Ausbürgern." Sort a "de-naturalization."
For the East Germans, it was easy, since there was a West Germany for them to send their own uncomfortable citizens to. For a while, the East Germans even had their very own resident American rock star/actor, Dean Reed. He died mysteriously at about age 48, when he drowned after making noises of maybe returning to the USA. He was living a relatively luxurious life in East Germany (by local standards, anyway), as the regime loved his propaganda value. It would not have done to have him to give it all up to return to the USA. He should have kept his mouth shut for three more years. By then, the regime had collapsed, and he would have been free to do what he wanted, and--better yet--seen all the dossiers his "friends" had amassed on him.
Some former East Germans made a film about artistic dissidents and their Government stalkers called "Das Leben der Anderen," or "The Lives of Others." It was SO well made that it got an Oscar in the USA, and deservedly so. All the major roles were played by actors from the former East Germany, and they were depicted to perfection.
We will have digitized many of our files, but I'm betting the efficiency is still less than optimal. With the number of Americans opposed to the current regime, they would practically need to enlist the other half of the country to keep an eye on us all.
Final note--I am in Sprout City for the day (aka Brussels), heading down to France tomorrow one last time before heading over to Boss Town. One of my Belgian colleagues told me of a visit to the USA by his sister and her husband, who is Greek. He said that when they arrived, they were interrogated for 45 minutes, getting asked the same stupid questions many times in a row, and had their pockets and hand luggage taken apart in separate interrogation rooms. This is exactly the same thing the East Germans would do to me on occasion when returning to West Berlin from East Berlin. I was the only one in the room without a uniform, a gun, or the right to stand up without permission. The first time, it was a little intimidating. The second and third times, I just let them have their fun. It was just control and harassment for the sake of control and harassment. "WE are in charge here!" OK, I wouldn't think of disputing it. And after 45 minutes, they let me go and moved on to their next victim. A pointless power play by a pointless regime. But as long as the Trumpanzees are in power, no one from the family of my Belgian colleague (including him) intends on ever setting foot in the United States again--not smart on our part, as our country could use the money.

(2,341 posts)It is a thoroughly corrupt organization, not unlike FIFA, that is just another institution trying to grab as much money as possible on the backs of mostly amateur athletes that get very little in return. And the same can be said of US college athletics, at least when we are taking football and basketball.
Be that as it may, it seems to me the twisted brain of Trump would be delighted to see these Olympics moved from California. Trump has never built anything useful in his life. His whole existence is about stepping on other people, inflicting pain. He would love to see California have to drop this now.
We should also note that if the games do go forward, this will be in the last 6 months of Trump's presidency, assuming he is still alive. So that could break either way with respect to the November 2028 elections which would be only about 2 months after the games.
Wiz Imp
(9,085 posts)That's more than 3 full months prior to the election. I believe you're completely wrong about Trump being happy to have the Olympics moved from Los Angeles. He'd throw a fit. There is no other city in the US which is suitable to host - the IOC has already made that clear. If moved, they would have to be moved to another country. Trump campaigned very hard to get the IOC to get Los Angeles chosen as the site for 2028 (even though they were the only bidder) He actually wanted the 2024 games but lost out to Paris. He views getting the 2028 Olympics in LA as a great accomplishment. Having it moved to another country would absolutely devastate Trump. I can only imagine how insanely he would react if this were to happen.
The biggest problem in moving them would be the fact that not a single other city/country in the world placed a bid for these games.

The closer we get to the date of the games, it gets exponentially harder to make any changes, so this campaign has to start right now and ramp up quickly.

(64,307 posts)Trump's newly announced travel ban has increased further the calls for a Boycott of the 2026 World Cup. Though the ban comes with an exemption that could apply to players, staff or associated family members participating in the tournament, Democrats are calling the move "reckless" and "discriminatory" with fears that it will lead to chaos and confusion with regards to the US's hosting of events including the World Cup, the Club World Cup and the Olympics. The exemption states that the following are not subject to the ban"
"Any athlete or member of an athletic team, including coaches, persons performing a necessary supporting role, and immediate relatives, traveling for the World Cup, Olympics, or any other major sporting event as determined by the secretary of state"
EDIT
The controversy comes on top of fears that Trump's hardline immigration policies will deter fans from traveling to the US after recent detention horror stories from tourists. Others have mocked Infantino and Trump for sharing three key traits - a love of money; a thirst for power; and rampant narcissism. There's no word yet on whether Qatar is also giving Infantino a $400 million plane, but would it surprise anyone if they were?
UEFA meanwhile accused Infantino of pursuing "private political interests" ahead of his responsibility to football. Angry statements have little to no affect on the way that Infantino and/or Trump behave. That's why increasingly people are calling for more radical action and to hit Trump and Infantino where it hurts: their wallet.
