EXCLUSIVE: Someone Waived Ghislaine Maxwell's Sex Offender Status to Move Her to a Minimum Security Camp in Texas

About an hour ago, CNN and NBC reported that Ghislaine Maxwell was moved to a minimum security camp in Texas.

According to sources who have spoken on the condition of anonymity, she has been moved to FPC Bryan, about 100 miles northwest of Houston.

The reason for the move is listed as a “lesser security transfer” (code 308) according to a transfer document I reviewed, which is completely inappropriate of for inmates who are in the early stages of serving their sentences, according to another source. “This is such obvious corruption. I have never seen this before,” said another person at BOP familiar with the situation.

The unit that approves waivers for sex offenders to be moved to minimum security camps is the Designation and Sentence Computation Center near Dallas. Currently, the senior deputy assistant director is Rick Stover, a career BOP employee who speaks frequently with White House officials.

Lows are still fenced facilities with strict security, whereas camps are not fenced and have less restrictions. Neither one is a picnic, but the Tallahassee Low where she currently resides is very much a prison, just slightly less restrictive than other higher designations, and with less violent inmates and those closer to release.

BOP does not allow sex offenders in camps, nor people with so many more years (presumably) to serve on their sentence, as she does. So this move is straight up bullshit. But even without the fence, she will not be having fun. And she can always be re-designated to a higher facility again if she gets in trouble.

and recreation and education options. So yoga classes being offered is not some special perk, it's quite commonly available in medium and high facilities also.

As for "stroll around the grounds," inmates in a low can go from one place to another on the compound only during open movement for a few minutes every hour or so. They unlock the doors, you go where you are permitted to go, and then they re-lock the doors. They can also "stroll around" the recreation yard while they're there, which is separately fenced off. But she sure isn't just walking around wherever she wants to, at any time. She won't be able to do that in a camp either.

She has been in a comfortable setting. (While not having been housed in one myself, I have had two associates who were. They were in ones for men. The options for "recreation" are, as you note, available in all of them.)

The timing on this is curious. In a few days, we may learn more about the "official" reasons. Clearly, the administration is uncomfortable with having her at any US location. As I noted a few days ago, someone in the White House suggested sending her to either England or France. I suspect that was Stephen Miller's idea.
