A reporter asked Trump, On the monthly jobs report, going forward, why should anyone trust the numbers?
Youre right, Trump interrupted. Why should anybody trust numbers? You go back to election day, look what happened two or three days before with massive, wonderful job numbers, trying to get [Joe Biden] or [Kamala Harris] elected.
Earlier Friday, Trump wrote on Truth Social:
I was just informed that our Countrys Jobs Numbers are being produced by a Biden Appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamalas chances of Victory. This is the same Bureau of Labor Statistics that overstated the Jobs Growth in March 2024 by approximately 818,000 and, then again, right before the 2024 Presidential Election, in August and September, by 112,000. These were Records No one can be that wrong? We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they cant be manipulated for political purposes. McEntarfer said there were only 73,000 Jobs added (a shock!) but, more importantly, that a major mistake was made by them, 258,000 Jobs downward, in the prior two months. Similar things happened in the first part of the year, always to the negative. The Economy is BOOMING under TRUMP despite a Fed that also plays games, this time with Interest Rates, where they lowered them twice, and substantially, just before the Presidential Election, I assume in the hopes of getting Kamala elected How did that work out? Jerome Too Late Powell should also be put out to pasture. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
The president said he fired McEntarfer because he thought her numbers were wrong.

...doesn't take much to look back and see what he said about the same Labor Dept's numbers when they gave him a political talking point against the Biden administration, or against VP Harris' campaign:
NYT, Nov. 1, 2024:
Job creation stalled in October, with employers adding only 12,000 positions in a month that included a major strike and two destructive hurricanes. Unemployment remained steady at 4.1 percent.
The number was significantly lower than economists had expected, suggesting either that disruptions took a larger toll than they had forecast, or that the underlying pace of job growth might be slowing.

...the Trump campaign used the Biden labor dept. jobs report to bash the Harris campaign:
The Trump campaign pounced on the jobs numbers, describing them as a catastrophe and definitively reveals how badly Kamala Harris broke our economy.

...in fact, the Biden numbers for that same period were later revised upward in December:
The job market rebound in November made it much more likely that President Joe Biden would leave office after overseeing an economy that added jobs every single month of his presidency, something no other president in history has done.
If the economy adds jobs in December and January, then Biden will have completed his entire presidency with positive job growth. That record was nearly broken in October when strikes and hurricanes pushed job creation into barely positive territory. However, the Bureau of Labor Statistics upwardly revised its October count Friday, taking it to 36,000 jobs from 12,000, making it less likely that future revisions will make it negative.

...it doesn't take a genius to recognize that if the Biden Labor Dept. was cooking the numbers to advantage Democrats, it wouldn't have handed Trump a talking point on the most salient issue in the election days before we voted. Especially when there was actually good news underneath the revised downturn in employment.
Once again, Trump is amplifying what is an provably false and obvious lie with the expectation that the truth won't catch up with him.
But almost everyone but the inveterate liar-in-chief can see what an immature and transparently shameful thing it is to be the ONLY president to cry so hard about bad job numbers to the point of claiming, not only that they don't exist, but that it's some kind of plot against him.
It's not just an embarrassment for all of the world to see, it's a clumsy play at totalitarianism, as he has fired the head of the people doing the independent analysis and will ostensibly put someone in there who will be loath to produce numbers which contradict and anger the king.
Right in front of everyone, he's removed the independent, objective analyst and will replace her with someone who will never gain the trust of the people who do business with the United States.
Never again, under this president, will the people who lend us money; the people who set our credit rating, be able to rely on the numbers the United States provides them as accurate and true.
Commerce with America is now subject to the dain of the emperor who is dictating down to us his own fantastical impression of reality and centering his policies and actions around his dirt-dumb delusions.
But on this one; on a norm of non-interference and respect for the numbers investors in the country and around the world rely on to be independent of politics; a norm which Democratic and republican presidents, one after the other have followed, almost to a fault; Trump is embarrassing himself far beyond anything he can fathom behind his insecurity about his own fecklessness.
Not only can everyone see the emperor losing his shirt on his jobs numbers and economy, everyone can see this snowflake melting in the heat of the glare.
