(52,387 posts)when it suits their prejudices. They want the law to punish their enemies, but turn a blind eye to members of their tribe.
Their idea of illegal or immoral is contingent on who is the perpetrator and what is their race, religion, politics, and gender identity.

Maybe start at the White House!
PatSeg
(52,387 posts)It's not about "illegals", as it is quite clear that they don't care about what is legal and what is illegal. It is about what and who they like and what and who they dislike.
These tend to be the most subjective people in the world, seemingly incapable of seeing any situation through the eyes of other people.

(866 posts)Democrats should just say no. Want to know why? Because Donald Trump was installed by Putin, and our own intelligence agenices say that was the case. It literally doesnt matter what he, or the illigitimate supreme court thinks.

(1,271 posts)They say the Russians meddled in our election by influencing the electorate through targeted ads and mass disinformation. But there was nothing that came out from them saying they actually changed vote totals.
Now did they cause Trump to win? It's likely that program worked just enough to tilt the election. But they weren't actually stuffing ballot boxes or removing votes, so saying Putin installed him isn't exactly factual.

JACK HOPKINS NOW
This Is Not a Drill: When the FBI Hunts Lawmakers for Political Resistance...Youre in a Coup
[snip]
By turning law enforcement into a political hit squad, Abbott signals that resistance to authoritarian agendas wont be tolerated. Its chilling.
This isn't just political theater; its precedent-shattering.
If the federal government can go after state legislators for political resistance, theres nothing stopping future governors from either party from weaponizing law enforcement against their opposition. Thats not hyperbole its a future already written.
[snip]
Trump directly backed the push calling on the FBI to intervene and declaring Republicans are entitled to more House seats.
Cornyn publicly thanked Patel and Trump for swift action, reinforcing the message that federal might serves partisan ends now.
This isnt a red-state aberration its a national test run.
The message is clear: resist us and youll be hunted.
By merging state coercion with federal power under the aegis of Trumpism Texas has accelerated from norm erosion to authoritarian training ground.
[snip]
Redistricting is weaponized; dissenters are illegal targets.
FBI becomes partisan enforcer not neutral protector.
Next session: civil rights protests voting access defenders anti-gerrymandering groups at risk of federal arrest orders.

(28,657 posts)This isn't the first time this has happened
Last time we lasted 38 days... and we had several more Democrats in office at the time (meaning that fewer had to stay away to maintain the quorum-bust).
Texas legislators are "part time" and don't actually get paid much. Most have "real jobs" elsewhere. I'm not sure whether it would be legal or not for someone else to pay them to stay away... but whether that could happen or not they can't stay away indefinitely.
The strategy works if it gains enough national attention and energy to make the redistricting untenable for republicans... it can't win outright by denying the vote indefinitely. My guess is that we'll know in a few days when the term ends and the governor decides whether or not to call a special session.

(25,020 posts)Trump will get his way. He's talking about national guard in Wash DC because one guy got beat up. FFS
These fuckers and their law and order.
Gavin Newsom fought trump over the national guard in the courts. First Gavin won, then Trump's courts overruled a few hours later.
.
Trump deployed the troops through a presidential memo on June 7 and cited a rarely used federal statute permitting a president to deploy the National Guard in times of invasion, domestic rebellion or the inability for the federal government to carry out its laws. Trumps order was for 60 days and technically applied to all of the state Nation Guards in the U.S.
Trump praised the courts decision in a social media post last night and hinted that he may consider federalizing state National Guard troops in the future.

(Initially there were 2000 national guard troops here about 200 remain)

(59,807 posts)Abbott wants to cheat the voters of Texas out of their representation with his blatantly corrupt gerrymandering, for which he needs an even more unevenly drawn district map of Texas than exists now.
This reminds me of a situation between France and Switzerland some 45 years ago. France, totally incapable of managing their budget, kept dreaming up more and more taxes upon their people. Even then, our infant office in Paris was paying a 55% (!!!) payroll tax for our employees there, and they were getting hit for nearly another 50% out of what was left over, as well as paying a 20% VAT on everything they bought. But even that wasn't enough.
Many French citizens who could, hid their money in Switzerland, right across the border. That wasn't illegal, though not declaring it was. But the French weren't content with what pressure they could bring to bear on the Swiss through diplomatic channels, nor on their own citizens, who had been giving French governments the finger since 1789. So, they illegally sent their own agents into Switzerland to spy on French citizens. The Swiss noticed right away (it's like the move was unexpected), and arrested some of the French government people for operating illegally on Swiss Territory. The French went predictably ballistic, but the Swiss said, this is our country, and we have our laws, and while French citizens are welcome here, they will respect our laws, or get arrested and tossed out. Now Switzerland is tiny compared to France, and outside of watches, cheese, chocolate, and outdoor sports, they don't have much outside of their banking industry. But they DO have their fiercely guarded independence (neutral and no interest in joining the EU, which surrounds them on all sides), and they do not appreciate ham-fisted neighbors telling them what to do.
Pritzker may have some Swiss blood in him, but in any case, he is taking the same stance. Illinois is THEIR state, with laws enacted by ITS people, which will be enforced by Illinois law enforcement. Pritzker may not be able to force Texas to conduct its elections fairly, but he sure as hell is under no legal obligation to let Abbott enforce Texas laws in Illinois that have no standing in Illinois.
I don't have to presume that it would do any good to remind Abbott that the resistance to his gerrymandering of Texas is due to the fact that Texans don't want it.
