I hope all Arkansas cops are not as dumb as this one.
Did this dumbass really believe that drug dealers label their drugs with the name of the drug? Opium, Crack, Heroin???
JFC, what a dumbass.
Kapil Raghu, an immigrant from India, ended up spending a month in custody.
They knew when they opened that bottle that it was a bottle of cologne, said his wife, Ashley Mays, in a telephone interview with Atlanta Black Star. They knew it, and they still arrested him and took him to jail. No one had enough integrity to say, Hey, hold on, something is not right here.
The felony drug charges were dismissed after a crime lab determined the suspected narcotic was a popular perfume by Yves Saint Laurent that has been on the market since 1977.
But after Raghu was jailed, it was discovered he had overstayed his visa, whereupon jailers contacted ICE, who then transported him to a federal detention center in Louisiana, where he remained for four weeks before his release.
SNIP------
How did you find out it was opium? asked a commanding officer. Theres a label on it, responded Freshour.

(1,934 posts)At one point she visited the US and got it through the duty free shop. The customs people asked her if she had anything go declare. She declared the liquor she purchased along with the perfume. The guy called some folks over and she was interrogated before they let her go. It does happen, but this was may e in the early 80s.

(22,240 posts)Yes, I do know there are people in Arkansas who aren't Schlump voters. My best friend lives there, and her husband have never voted for the Orange Hellbeast ever. But I know it's a blood red state, and it's a pretty good bet that any random person off the street there is much more likely to be Republican than otherwise.

(150,692 posts)So, I'm not surprised by this. Most men have no idea about scents.
An illustration: In the 80s, I was on a plane from New York, flying home from a business trip. As I worked on a crappy drink on the plane, I noticed a scent that caught my attention. Pretty soon, I realized that its source was a flight attendant who was going up and down the aisle. I caught her attention. She smiled and asked if she could help me. I said, "I'm very curious about the scent you're wearing. I don't recognize it." She apparently thought I was flirting with her and smiled more broadly and said, "Oh, that's new. It's Giorgio "Red."
I said, "Thank you very much. I really like it. I'm going to buy some for my wife." Her broad smile disappeared, and she didn't seem to notice me the rest of the flight. However, my wife did like it as a gift, I'm pleased to say.
Misunderstandings. Perfume. I don't know, but maybe Opium is intoxicating.

we would get bricks of hash (1/2 x 6 x 10 approx) in white cotton bags. stamped on the bags in blue ink was an emblem with two columns (like architectural columns) with the words CAMB DEVID.

(14,250 posts)it wasn't a branded vial. It was a generic one (like this) with a paper, hand-written label.

On the other hand, what idiotic criminal is going to label his drugs? And, all the cop had to do was unscrew the top and sniff it to verify that it was cologne.

Spiked heels, daring neckline on the dress, smoking a cigarette and waiting for someone to buy her a drink. Heartbreak sure to follow.

(9,897 posts)There wasa younger female cop with him too. I couldn't believe neither one of them had never heard of Opium perfume. I wear it all the time. The Opium noise and the the plain Opium.
And his wife was all crazy too, asking him where he got it etc. And in the video he very clearly said it was a perfume.
Then ICE COMPLICATES MATTERS. Can you imagine how much this has cost them monetarily and mentally?

(84,709 posts)I have no idea why a search was needed. The justification was poor. And I don't know why it took so long to get an answer back. Are people just supposed to sit in jail while the police try to sort out misunderstandings? They never heard of "liquid opium" but they arrested him anyway. Also, why is the police department in a hurry to call ICE? Thats not their job.
