NYPD Exploring Ways To Search Online For ‘Deranged’ Gunmen

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/12/21/nypd-exploring-online-search-for-deranged-gunmen/

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - In the wake of the Newtown massacre, the NYPD is examining ways to search the internet for potential “deranged” gunmen

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said that their searches would be similar to those being used to spot terrorist chatter online.

“And what we’re talking about is publicly available websites, chatrooms, that sort of thing,” Kelly said, adding that algorithms could be used. That will enable us to use, perhaps, commonly used terms that are used by people engaged in this sort of activity,” he said.

“The techniques would include cyber-searches of language that mass-casualty shooters have used in e-mails and Internet postings,” Kelly said.

Kelly said intelligence is most helpful in these cases since shooters can cause multiple deaths in seconds regardless of how deft the police response.

Even regardless of supposed intent:

The key, with people who haven't committed any crime, is to look at what they are going through and support them to move in positive directions.

being that minorities are not the ones that do any of these mass shootings(or very few of them).

The NYPD is an entity in themselves, regardless of the official pecking order.
They have a bad history with minorities, so it needs to be assured this doesn't go to the wrong thing.

The mcveigh's out there can be found with good police work, much like they found OBL in his hide in plain sight hideaway. And i equate all these mass shootings as the same as the terrorist movement. Anythign to stop even one death is worth it.

"Anything"

Really?

"Anything"?

How about a camera in your living room? Would that be ok?

Funny, I just glanced at your nick. It's uncanny sometimes how closely one's nick corresponds with their posts.

Absolutely uncanny. Check it out!

PS: RE: "one death" You mean here, in this country, not presumably wherever the emperor is droning next year, correct?

We need to have a open and lively discussion of all the aspects of these events and their causes. There is and must be the means in our society to stop them, but the term "anything" is simply too far a stretch.

So many people who have never seen Psycho, there's no respect for the classics any more.

If all Americans don't have cameras in their bathrooms then we aren't doing everything possible to eliminate killing.

It's going to be hard to entirely cover many bathrooms with only a single camera so multiple cameras may be required, a mandate for security analysis and camera systems would ensure that everyone do their part to save as many lives as humanly possible.

I suspect the poster may be vegan due to their great fondness for word salad.

as anyone who knows me know
I am a big fan of Senator/Gov. all around great guy Bob Graham from Florida.

When I was on the official John Kerry board, my name was Bob Graham for Vice President.
Then the dumpsterEdwards was picked and I was forced to change it, so it went to
Bob Graham for anything meaning any position in the Kerry cabinet, of which supposedly he was promised one.
Of course the snook lost because of Ralph Nader among other things
So that led to having the same name here, Graham4anything.
Never thought of the double entendre, but it was unintentional.

btw- How did the gun thingy do for Alexander Hamlton?

and as your name is green, I assume that means you are a big fan, like me of liberal populist Mike Bloomberg, the singular #1 backer of the envirnment. Correct?

Why are people afraid of being seen?
I use my c/c for every single purchase, so they know what toilet paper I use.
I use my e-z pass for everything so they know where I am
I use a cell phone
If I get into an accident and am in a ditch off the side of the road, they will know where to find me and save my life

what are people hiding that they are afraid?
why do people stockpile guns if not because of racism and fear?

again, how did that gun thingydingy do for Alexander Hamilton? And he was the first banker, wasn't he?
those founding fathers, the biggest hypocrites of all time in their personal life.

NYPD Unveils Creepy New Surveillance System Developed with Microsoft

The NYPD and Microsoft worked together to develop the Domain Awareness System, a sophisticated law enforcement technology solution that aggregates and analyzes existing public safety data streams in real time, providing NYPD investigators and analysts with a comprehensive view of potential threats and criminal activity.

The city’s official announcement also helpfully outlines a few scenarios where the system might come in handy:

Investigators will have immediate access to information through live video feeds, and instantly see suspect arrest records, 911 calls associated with the suspect, related crimes occurring in the area and more;
Investigators can map criminal history to geospatially and chronologically reveal crime patterns;
Investigators can track where a car associated with a suspect is located, and where it has been in past days, weeks or months

While this raises our Orwellian hackles, we can’t help but wonder whether this will soon be obsolete. The future of crime-fighting is all about leveraging big data to gain that sweet, sweet precognitive edge. It’s all about the algorithms, baby.
