With this news about Jimmy Kimmel, I am asking seriously.

And I plan to be one on Oct. 18 as well.
I have zero hope it will do anything, but I'm not going to go quietly into the gas chambers.

(22,752 posts)By protesting, we are not part of the overthrow of our country. Little comfort, but I'll die proud that I didn't give up my principles.
If any of us really fear that DU is going to be killed off, maybe our administrators can rename it to something that disguises its intent, without drawing scrutiny from the rwnj.
If that isn't possible, start getting contact info with people you want to stay in touch with, in case the worst happens.

(2,155 posts)Now back to our regularly-scheduled urgent matters.
Wiz Imp
(9,072 posts)And they don't. ABC DID NOT make this decision so Nexstar's mwmerger gets approved I'm sure they couldn't care less about that . ABC made this decision solely because someone in power there it decided it was easier than trying to fight Trump when he tries to pull the licenses of all ABC affiliates even though there is no chance of Trump ever succeeding at that.
Irish_Dem
(80,016 posts)Our opinion is meaningless right now.

(9,072 posts)Nexstar only owns about 10% of ABC Affiliates. This is NOT about the Nexstar merger. Nexstar stations need ABC far more than ABC needs the Nexstar stations.

(5,334 posts)BS suspended me for suspicious activity months ago. They have not provided me with any more information than that.
Ive sent a few emails asking whats up but the couple of emails I received in response are boilerplate if not bot driven. I only posted there 2 times, although I lurked there for awhile (I lurked here at DU for a year after 9-11 before signing up).
I was using a Norton VPN when I got suspended and saw on Reddit that that sometimes causes problems (but not suspensions). I did have way more followed vs. followers, maybe that contributed? But that was because, when I signed up, I used several starter packs offered by those I recognized from other places (DU, Substack, etc.). But, due to a lack of forthrightness, and ghosting my inquiries, they have de facto banned me.
So dont use BlueSky as the alternative (although, despite my problems with them, it is a good site).

If Miller does shut DU down (which I'm not existentially worried about, but also not entirely dismissing), he's also going to go after any other place we move to. Bsky, Discord, Mastodon, Reddit, Steam forums, anywhere that's publicly visible is going to be a target.
Might be a good time to look into Hyphanet FKA Freenet; it's probably the darkest darknet out there. It's an order of magnitude more difficult to use than the visible internet, but it's very difficult, if not impossible, to censor it.
usonian
(23,676 posts)It's Freenet.
sir pball
(5,255 posts)The successor to the original Freenet, by the same development team, had a codename but the head honcho decided to change it to "Freenet 2023" when they released it. It's a lot better in terms of the decentralization, but doesn't offer anonymitywhich is, under the current regime, an essential part of any communications network.
Edited my original to make it clearer that it's the OG Freenet.

(13,030 posts)The last few weeks as things have been escalating with almost no defense on our side.
They have fired most in government jobs that don't go along wth them, they have all 3 branches on their side and 6-3 of supremes. What do we have? As I see more and more actors move out of the country all I can think isn't that nice to have money to escape this.
And because CA has always been the state to hate gerrymandering it's going to be hard to get enough to vote for it. All my life I have believed it was wrong but if I lived in Cali I would vote for it, but I am involved politically. Saw last poll and only 48% would vote yes.
My husband keeps telling me to get off this site before they come after us. Are we all going to be on lists like Germany?

(1,934 posts)I saw all the signs. Most folks, here, were non-plussed by the question. I believe they said how we have protections - the constitution and institutions. Here we are. I think the roller coaster of squashing dissent is at the top of the hill coming down quickly. I believe they will act quickly, as to shock the country and not give them time to fight back.
I believe DU is stationed out of Canada. Or, maybe that is their pay system? At any rate, if China can control their internet, I am positive the US can do the same. It really will be a case where Democrats are underground literally and figuratively.
I miss my country. Sad thing is they believe we are sad because they won and they own us. I am sad because we all lost and I love our country.

(23,500 posts)i have been angry, outraged, saddened for others on a nearly daily basis.
i have a bluesky account. i don't use my real name, but i do have a picture of myself. i took that picture down today and went with something generic. i was afraid of someone using an image search to possibly find my true identity.
This Kimmel move in particular has me really scared. for my job, for my well being. Thought crimes have come to america, and the government is using the full force of its power to ruin people. my wife is disabled. if i lose my job, it would be a financial disaster.
I no longer feel completely safe expressing myself. At least on DU my username can't be tracked to me, so i at least feel SORT of safe posting here?. But i have to temper my feelings with the thought of "what if some MAGAt doesn't like what i say, and reports my words to the government, who in turn threaten my employer with sanctions if they don't fire me?"
I certainly wouldn't express my opinions in person to anyone, or attach them to my real name or picture anymore.

(897 posts)but I fully expect this type of scenario. I think we are past the point of democracy and it is only downhill from here. There is no way they will not try to stay in power long after the Dotard is 6 ft under. Most Americans are oblivious and only care if it impacts them directly. Americans are asleep behind the wheel.

(17,094 posts)More importantly, does everyone have a plan in place to stay in contact with family, etc. should communication go down completely?
Our family has a centralized location that everyone knows to head towards as soon as possible should anything like that happen. We made the plan with the understanding that nothing is perfect, but we didn't want everyone heading in ten different directions. We have also included several friends who are "family", too. Every person has been instructed to bring with them what they can as far as survival items. The issue of course would be everyone safely getting to that location, but it was the best we could come up with.
It makes me sick to even think we have to have that in place, but at this stage of the game, everyone should have a plan.

(23,706 posts)Reminder that on election day in 2016, DU was taken off line by hackers. That's the minimum of what will happen.
If it is allowed to exist, user names will be linked to real names so an AI can be tasked with targeting posters here for retribution.
