(17,016 posts)The LinkedIn post that inspired the short does say that the student was asked back in:
In life and at work, we often live next to each other instead of with each other. We console ourselves that the problems of others are none of our business. We go home and are glad that we were spared. But it's also about standing up for others. Every day an injustice happens in business, in sports or on the tram. Relying on someone to sort it out is not enough. It is our duty to be there for others. Speaking for others when they cannot.
And yes. The professor asked the prior informed student to come back to again.

Signed, Bozo, a former Graduate Teaching Assistant. And glad for the free tuition and meagre wages.
edit to add: "meagre" is spelled funny, because I thought it would reflect the Dickensian nature of the wages.
Cheers.

(1,025 posts)Id like to think there would have been at least one student rise in her defense.

(1,934 posts)If I sat in the classroom, I would not have done anything. Not because it did not affect me, but because I would not be sure what it was about. Did the teacher catch her stealing tests? Maybe cheating? Or maybe something just as nefarious?
Maybe I would have spoken up if he told her to leave, she asks why and he replies, "No reason." But if I knew this teacher as reasonable then I would assume there was a reason why she was not supposed go be there.
Holding g all of them to account for not speaking up over a wrong you were not sure existed is short sighted and makes assumptions that may not be true.

(1,934 posts)Using common sense to say I do not know all the details. (They didn't and I certainly did not) and figuring folks do not get thrown out of class for no reason, so there must be information I am missing.
To me, it is akin to that bullshit story where a potential employee is taken to lunch by the possible employer. The potential employee waits his food before trying it. He is not hired because the employer thinks that the employee makes judgements without finding out the facts. (salting without trying). Meanwhile, I always thought it may be the employer who makes snap judgements. What if the employee eats at that restaurant all the time? Maybe he knows the food is always under salted. Now he is not hired because of a falsehood the employer had without checking to see if he is correct.
Yeah, I know what the video is trying to say. It is a great message but the delivery system (for me) is not a good one.
At one point my abnormal psych teacher !are a point in class. It was faulty, as I feel the examples above are. I did not call her out in front of class, but I did stay after and told her what I thought. She was open minded enough to say I was right. There are many ways to think of a situation.

(8,237 posts)It happens to be a classroom. In the country at large, in our everyday lives if we don't stand up to injustice because it's not literally happening to us, we could be next.

(129,793 posts)me it was none of my business, in which case I would have been filing a complaint. And think about this: If something such as you described were, in fact, the case, I would expect the professor to handle it privately, for a number of reasons. If, in fact, such a situation were the case, and he chose to engage in such a public manner, he would be showing himself to be a bully, and an ass.
Any and all of my teachers, instructors, and professors knew me well enough not to do what I described above.

(6,226 posts)If someone (or a group) is singled out by authorities or an authority figure, there is assumed guilt, even if it doesnt exist. If the police arrest someone, they must be guilty. Why would they be arrested otherwise?
Everyone thinks they would be the one to speak up and stand for their own morals, even if inviting punishment on themselves. Most would be wrong. Its easier to just say nothing.

(5,070 posts)so empathy is the foundation of justice.
If everyone cannot be assured of the same outcome, good or bad, under the law then respect for the law cannot be assured.
Conservatism is in itself contrary to justice.
Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect. Wilhoit.

(14,243 posts)They knew that speaking to the Dean after class about what happened would likely spark an investigation and consequences for the teacher, whereas getting in his face would only get them tossed out as well.
