Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray apologized Wednesday for a social media post that stirred up some pushback online. In a now-deleted Instagram post, Murray posed with his pit bull while wearing a throwback Virginia Tech Michael Vick jersey.
In 2007, Vick agreed to a plea deal after being indicted on charges of financing and participating in a dogfighting ring. He spent 21 months in federal prison. Asked about the picture, which featured Murray and one of his two dogs, the Cardinals quarterback strongly condemned animal cruelty before adding that he deleted the post.
"In no way, shape or form do I condone animal cruelty or dogfighting or whatever it is," Murray said. "For me personally, y'all saw me wear the Michael Vick jersey, a player I admired very much growing up.
My dogs, Trunks and Swoosh, they both get treated like kings. In no way, shape or form am I condoning that. I saw how it affected people and decided to take it down."
Vick, a star quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons from 2001-06, was suspended by the NFL in August 2007 and subsequently spent nearly two years behind bars following his guilty plea. In addition to financing the operation, Vick admitted that he had a hand in killing some of the dogs.

(29,863 posts)Mostly from the Cardinals fan base that probably thinks the grass is greener on the other side as far as starting QBs.
I don't think he was doing anything intentional, Vick and Murray are both dual threat QBs so I'm sure Vick was an inspiration for his style of play. Also Vick hasn't broken the law since he served his sentence almost 20 years ago so I don't think Murray was making a point about dogfighting one way or the other if he was even thinking about it all when he posted the picture.

(29,215 posts)You can't know Michael Vick without knowing that he shot, strangled, drowned, and poisoned his dogs.
All things he admitted to doing.
To identify with him is to be a sociopath.
This Murray fellow picked the WRONG person to idolize.

(29,863 posts)I'm not sure how familiar he was with the Vick's crimes compared to people who were adults at the time like I was. After Vick served his time he had some successful seasons with the Eagles. Vick's style of play was ahead of the NFL's time and I'm sure a lot of modern dual threat QBs do look to Vick as sort of opening the door to them and their style of play.
I can understand if people don't want to forgive Vick but in that case I think a bigger issue is the college that hired Vick as a head coach rather than Murray wearing his jersey.

(29,215 posts)Everybody who knows Vick knows he's evil.
If you want to ignore it and just praise his athletic ability, whatever.
But it doesn't change the fact that praising him as a person is praising a sociopath.

(3,426 posts)He's 28 years old now so he'd have been 8 or 9 when Vick's animal cruelty came to light. Twenty years later I don't imagine it was top of mind when he put on that jersey. He probably just grabbed it and put it on without even thinking about it and then took the picture later in the day, again without even thinking about what he was wearing.
That strikes me as significantly more likely than some coded reference intended as support for Vick's cruelty to animals. Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity (or thoughtlessness, in this case). When it was brought to his attention he took down the picture.
This kinda strikes me as outrage for the sake of outrage.

(3,426 posts)You think that he went out of his way to publicly and openly support murdering innocent animals? That he sat down and said to himself, "Okay Kyler, today's the day. You're gonna put on that Vick jersey and take a picture with your dogs so the whole world will know that you support torturing and murdering dogs"? That's what you imagine his thought process was here?
Not gonna lie, that strikes me as wildly improbable. But if believing it gives you some kind of satisfaction then go nuts, I guess.

(29,215 posts)So, in that sense, yes, he was supporting torturing dogs.
