I will not communicate with any of my family that voted for him, or my neighbors who told me, Harris was too over the top. 2026 WILL BE the beginning of the end of this MAGA BULLSHIT NIGHTMARE. Maybe after they come here and see how things are, they probably catch on that they are hated by the Repukes and Maga-cult.

Immigrants finally figure out that they have no chance of finding a better life if the Magas stay in charge. That's when they become "liberals" ... or else they get deported and realize that none of it mattered anyway.

But it's the Maga-cult that are driving this, they can stop this behavior at any time.

We can't underestimate how grossly uninformed they are, how lost in a bubble created by professional propagandists who use them as pawns, how their education (or lack there-of) has not prepared them for critical thinking, how desperate and beaten down some of them are (think, Ashley Babbit, post WWI Germany).

People are after all responsible for their actions. But most people will not abandon their paradigm for new information, across all of society. That's why budging anyone into rational behavior is so hard.
As for greed: that is the story with the MAGA wealthy, and I have no excuses for them. They are in a position to be informed, can afford to care a bit about the common good, and ought to know that would be in their interests too. The uber-rich are mentally ill as far as I'm concerned with no moral compass and way too much power.
I can't accuse the working class of greed in a time when the economy just gets worse and worse for them. When people are financially stressed they choose whoever they think will help and they have tended to get it wrong throughout much of our democratic history. Like the Robber Barons putting up McKinley and tricking the masses into voting for him.

Blue collar people used to vote for Democrats. West Virginia was a deep blue state, a reliable elector of Democrats.

What happened? People aren't poorer now than they were in the 1960s. I remember the poverty and deprivations. Yes, things are bad now for a lot of people but they're arguably better than they were 50 years ago. Better healthcare, for instance - which people have turned their backs on.

Sat Oct 4, 2025, 09:49 AM

There are a lot of people who start going MAGA after they leave hardship. There's a line from one of Laz's favorite song about neuro-divergancy and struggling to fit in.
"If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor"
You talk to a MAGA, and even when you bring out the teachings of their supposed Religious Mascot, it always comes up that they're terrified of having to give up any of their stuff, any of their comfortable lifestyle - to people they don't know and might be undeserving.
Doesn't matter if their parent came over and only got citizenship via Reagan's Amnesty. Doesn't matter if they used Johnson's Great Society programs, or the most successful Socialist Meritocracy organization in the World to advance into Middle Class (the US. Military)....
They got theirs, they won't give up a dollar to help anyone else if it might cause any inconvenience to them or the friends they aspire to hang out with.
On edit - even my SIL, who is one of those "sweet as pie" Small Town Christians who fancy themselves to not be racist because they have black friends an co-workers - and works for a Disability program...decided not to vote this time at all instead of vote for Harris, because the Democrats would increase her household taxes to unsupportable and force States to allow undeserving people to get State taxpayer money or resources (Free food, housing, phones, utilities, and addiction services) to support their bad habits even if they break the Law under some sort of "Equal Rights" concept that just spoils them.

She actually believes (and is afraid) that Democrats will eventually force her household to give some of their property to the State to pay for homeless, druggies/mentally unstable, or otherwise "not American" poor foreigners to take over the US workforce and culture - making life harder for her, while making life easier for them.

Sun Oct 5, 2025, 08:11 AM
Oct 2025

Yes, maybe they finally they have something for themselves and want to keep it but they are completely misinformed about who might take it away from them.

The RW wealthy are responsible for making sure these people think the threat is poor people receiving benefits of social programs, bloated government/waste, fraud and abuse, immigrants stealing jobs and housing... This line of reasoning always ignores the benefits these very people receive themselves from the socialistic aspects of our society and also ignores the lobbying efforts of big money that divert way more resources from the common good.

Compassion for others defines the Democratic outlook. We believe a rising tide lifts all boats. We look at the costs and repercussions down the road.
Republicans are about preserving wealth for the priveleged few. Period.

The person you cite is neither. She doesn't share the Democratic view, but neither is she among the priveleged few the Republicans are truly about. That's why they need to lie to her and frighten her with fairy tales of things the government doesn't and wouldn't do. She is a pawn in the RW plot to take power. R's will not meet her needs, they'll just keep her afraid, for their own benefit.

Sat Oct 4, 2025, 09:29 AM
Oct 2025

The one thing in your post I take issue with is that Democrats used to take better care of these folks. Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, and Joe Biden accomplished a lot before R's took back the House.

To be sure, the common folk have still been handed the short end of the stick -- to a large extent because Republicans consistently obstruct efforts to achieve a more equitable share of the tremendous wealth which could not be generated without the labor of so many struggling paycheck to paycheck.

And yet these same folks keep electing Republicans, voting against their own interests. Did they intentionally vote to pay more for insurance or lose their healthcare coverage altogether? Did they want Project 2025, or did they believe Trump when he said he had nothing to do with it?

Is it because they're filled with fear and hate for undocumented immigrants, non whites, non heteros, liberals, atheists?

To some extent, that is certainly true. And they are adults responsible for their own actions. It's easy to blame them for what is now hitting all of us.

But hate and blame will not help defeat the fascist cabal destroying our Constituutional democracy. We should not expect to convert die hard Trump cultists, but it makes no sense to deliberately alienate folks who were fooled into voting against their own interests.

We need swing voters in swing states to swing back the other way.

88. Exactly
Sun Oct 5, 2025, 07:25 AM

Of course Dems still do good things for working class and poor, while R's don't, but there was a move to the middle under Clinton though I'm becoming foggy about the specifics (repeal of Glass Steagall? Welfare reform? etc.). Unions for whatever reason have been weakened in recent decades and this was a major source of Democratic working class support.

The working class and poor MAGA and swing voters are voting against their own interests and we suffer the repercussions. It's easiest to hate them. But there have been through history people vulnerable to propaganda, and that's what is going on here. This kind of propaganda feeds on fears of not having enough and blaming people who are foreign or different, though it's really the creators of the propaganda who are taking the resources away. The plot is the same from one culture to another over time. Look at Hitler, Stalin, McCarthyism, Trump. The oligarchs have successfully made Socialism a dirty word, while offering Socialist subsidies to the rich and aligning themselves with a former KGB officer.

I think what is different now is the degree of propaganda from the right which just didn't happen in the days of Walter Cronkite. Media not adhering to journalistic standards, algorithms encouraging sensationalism and conflict, and interference by a totalitarian government who funds disinformation for Russia and abroad.

We only win if we can bring them over to our side. We have to focus on the swing voters, the low information voters, the voters in the bubble who could could learn if we could reach them, and not lump them in with the hard core right who are really prone to evil.

have been blocked in doing a lot of great things in recent decades. But we did move to the middle under Clinton.
True populists like Bernie Sanders have been branded as extreme, when his policies should be the logical direction of the party.
Carter's health care plan would have been much more sweeping than Obamacare, and though Obamacare was forced to moderate by Republicans, Carter had a Democratic Congress. This was an inside job--Kennedy blocked Carter's plan because he wanted to run for president and didn't want to give Carter a big win (a move Kennedy admitted later regretting).

With real proportional democracy without gerrymandering, the Electoral College, and R's packing the courts, Democrats would have done a lot more. But our response to political realities has been to moderate. I'm not sure that has worked out so well for the working class we used to command more of.

so now the Trump voting generational farmers/ranchers are going bust and begging for relief because of Trump's boomerang tariffs..fruits and vegetables are rotting in their fields because seasonal workers are rotting in detention centers...middle/low income Trump voters who actually believed a pathological liar when he said Medicaid/Medicare was off the table are now facing astronomical healthcare/prescription drug costs...

so when Trump voters whine "we didn't vote for this"...they absolutely did..they deserve all of Trump's toxic insanity..and you can bet given what they know now, if allowed to recast their votes they would "pull the lever" for the loathsome sewer slug because voting for a woman/a black woman is unconscionable..

We won't solve the racism as easily, but let start with getting them to vote in their own interests. Unless we think Kamala is the only candidate going forward, we don't have to try to break 2 glass ceilings in the next election. It shouldn't be a factor, but we must admit that it is.

I'm not suggesting they were ever selfless or compassionate. But they vote for the people who will do them harm anyway because they don't understand the issues or listen to honest reporting.

I think the most likely solution to intolerance is time: Children growing up exposed to gay people changed the landscape so that a ballot measure against gay marriage no longer helped RW people get elected, and liberals (Obama) stopped running away from the issue.
We won't convince old racists, but as more and more youth come of age the percentage of racists--and people afraid of transgender--will likely change. The question is, do we have enough time for that to matter given the Trump takeover?

But we don't really know what's behind where each person falls in politics. I was raised in a liberal family. My parents voted for Eugene McCarthy because Bobby Kennedy wasn't there for use as a peace candidate early enough. So who am I to say where I'd be if I'd grown up in a conservative family?

Cassidy Hutchinson was practically dis-owned by her family for just speaking the truth about her experience and standing up for the law re: Jan. 6. Until Jan. 6 this highly intelligent honest person was a Trump supporter. That's what coming from a RW background can do. But give her credit for seeing the light--MOST PEOPLE DON'T.

Too many people just aren't taking responsibility for getting informed, or questioning their bubble and yes they are responsible for that. I hope they learn from what they have wrought and we have another chance to do something about it.

I don't care if someone identifies as Democrat or not, or if they are pissed at Democrats for one or more things - I can relate.

Trumpism is a CANCER. It is EVIL.

Our elections system, very unfortunately, FORCES A BINARY CHOICE.

In my early 20's I was also uninformed and didn't get that. But the relatively small contingent of newer voters should not be enough to sway an election to the EVIL choice.

We apparently need to remind voters repeatedly that our presidential election is a BINARY CHOICE. You vote for "least evil", or by default you have voted for "most evil".

And please note, I don't subscribe to "least evil = still evil". If we had an election between Jane Goodall (rest in power) and Charlie Kirk (rest in putrefaction), would these self-absorbed whiners really sit it out? If they know who these people are? Even if they thought Goodall was somehow "exploiting" the animals she studied, or came up with some other reason she wasn't perfect? GMAFB, no one is perfect. "Least evil" can be phenomenally GOOD. People need to grow up.

Sat Oct 4, 2025, 11:36 AM
Oct 2025

And who they voted for.

Half of tRump's voters are out and proud, the other half try to hide their vote because they know they supported someone evil and it's socially unacceptable.

I put it like this: I think about how I'd handle things if someone confronted me about something Biden allegedly did. First, if I had not heard of that particular action, I'd verify the claim through a credible source. Then, if it's true, I would either explain why the action was necessary, or, if I didn't support the action, I would agree with the opinion that it was not a good move.

It's the complete opposite when it comes to tRump voters. If you confront them with the truth, they play all sorts of games: The closeted half gets to escape accountability entirely. The half that is willing to admit they voted for trump will lie, deny, deflect, gaslight or play ignorant--never taking responsibility.

I've been thinking about this topic more now that I'm working with more trumpets. One lady had the nerve to bring up supporting tRump and said he's cleaning up this country. I felt like she was intentionally trying to trigger me. Why would you bring up tRump in a professional setting? So I simply said, trump should release the epstein files. Her response was to start naming all these people who are supposedly in the epstein files - she named Beyonce, and a number of other black celebrities. 🙄 I said, I don't give a damn who's in the files, just release them so that all of them can be held accountable. Whoever they may be. She said something to the effect of all politicians and Hollywood actors are pedophiles. Huh?

It was a weird and disturbing argument she was making. But it's clarifying. Just say that you don't give a fuck that trump's a pedophile rapist who is openly obstructing justice for the victims. Don't spout bullshit about everyone else doing the same thing because that's not true. If it were true, then they should be held accountable too, whether I'm a fan of theirs or not. It's that simple.

Another trumper, an immigrant himself, had the nerve to say that trump is only going after and deporting violent criminals. Despite being a major eLoon fanboy, this is a smart guy who is aware of a lot of breaking news. How is it that he's well informed about all these other topics but he conveniently doesn't know about troops being deployed on American streets? He also claims to not know about the scandal where tRump tried to steal votes in Georgia. And we live in Georgia! GMAFB!

If you listen closely to trumpers, resentment always starts to spill out in conversation. They start slowly slipping in "innocent" comments about different groups of people - the Indians, the Arabs, the Mexicans, etc. I'm black, so they won't mention "the blacks" when talking to me. 🙄 They know how to adjust their talking points for the room they're in.

Even non-white trump supporters have the same type of grievances and in conversation you'll notice that they frequently stereotype people by race and country of origin. It's a major part of their ideology.

So, no, I don't believe these are people who are innocent victims of a conman. These are people who are full of resentment, envy, and anger towards their fellow Americans and immigrants. They enjoy the suffering that we're all witnessing. As long as it's not them, they're fine with it.

As far as the best way to get them out of the cult? I'm not sure. The only thing that works with these people is when they are personally under attack. That's when they see the light.

https://www.snopes.com/news/2016/07/28/donald-trump-criticized-for-mocking-disabled-reporter/

... When Kovaleski pointed out that there were never any reports (not even unsubstantiated ones) of "thousands" or even "hundreds" of people celebrating the 9/11 attacks in the New York area, as Trump claimed to have witnessed, Trump countered with a retort in which he criticized the journalist for attempting to "back away" from his previous article and seemingly mocked Kovaleski's physical appearance.

Serge Kovaleski suffers from arthrogryposis, a condition which limits the movement of joints and is particularly noticeable in Kovaleski's right arm and hand. After referring to Kovaleski as "a nice reporter," Trump launched into an impression of him, pointedly flopping his right arm around with his hand held at an odd angle while saying (in imitation of Kovaleski): "Now, the poor guy, you’ve got to see this guy: 'Uhh, I don't know what I said. Uhh, I don't remember,' he's going like 'I don't remember. Maybe that's what I said'" ...

As MLK Jr. says:

"Darkness cannot drive out Darkness, only light can do that. Hatred cannot drive out hatred. Only love can do that."

We dont build a better society by trying to dominate and win against each other. We do it by love, outreach, understanding and helping each other. Don't use our enemies as an example of how to treat your enemies. Just love them, as nearly every major religion encourages.

It is freaking intense, like 2 seasons of Ozark intensity crammed into a one season limited series. Jason directed a lot of the episodes, and I'm hear to tell ya, if you liked Ozark, you should like this one as well (conversely if Ozark was decided NOT your bag, this won't be either, unless your issue with Ozark was that it was too slow. This one is not, IMHO ... though some people do complain it's too slow, they did the same with Ozark. I don't mind the slower, world-building episodes of either show, and I thought this has less of that).

Even if there really isn't a Ruth-like character to feel sympathetic towards, and the one romantic relationship that develops in the show doesn't really ring sincere or have much chemistry, it's forgivable because everything else about it is really well-done. Jason and Jude Law both put on acting clinics, they're so good in it. All the acting is good in fact.

We just got done with Ep 6 which was a freaking CRAZY episode, there's 2 more still. Looking forward to seeing how they wrap it up

The vibe/formula is very similar even if the settings are entirely different. Come to think of it there IS something of a Ruth-like character in the form of Vince's (Bateman) daughter, but the actress doesn't burst off the screen like Julia Garner did, and she's not as integral in the storyline as Ruth.

57. I remember I had an exchange with a wingnut dipshit last year on like reddit or X or something
Sat Oct 4, 2025, 11:32 AM
Oct 2025

In it, I was creating a list of Trump public lies just in the last week alone (at the time) and one of them was something very close to this:

2) Falsely claimed that children are being kidnapped by their school and given gender-reassignment surgery against their will, and that this has been going on for at least 15 years.

and this person of course was like "Baloney, Trump never said that!"

So then I provided both a video link that showed the quote I referred to, and a transcript from it, and another transcript of him saying basically the same thing another time. Here are the quotes:

“The transgender thing is incredible. Think of it. Your kid goes to school and comes home a few days later with an operation. The school decides what’s going to happen with your child. Fifteen years later, your child comes to you and says, ‘Mom, Dad, who did this to me? Why did this happen to me?’ And you have no idea.”

Can you imagine you’re a parent and your son leaves the house and you say, ‘Jimmy, I love you so much, go have a good day in school,’ and your son comes back with a brutal operation? Can you even imagine this? What the hell is wrong with our country?

This person then seriously came back at me like
LOL he didn't say kids were being forced by the school, OR kidnapped, see I knew you were the liar
Then we had this back and forth where I explained that, true, he did not LITERALLY SAY those exact words, but that my initial synopsis was absolutely accurate, and they kept arguing, no I was wrong, he didn't say what I accused him of saying, he actually meant something different, etc, etc.

That was one of the last times I had a actual back and forth with a wingnut online, because for like 10 years now I usually just say my piece and then ignore them when they reply with their (inevitably) stupid shit. This was one of the few times I actually gave one of them another chance, and confirmed it was still true that there is LITERALLY no point in talking to ANY of the cultists about anything related to IQ47. They WILL NOT have an intellectually honest debate with someone they know to be liberal or Dem, EVER.

The actor didn’t waste any time in hitting out at Trump and the voters, who he said are making a conscious effort to hide themselves from the truth of what is going on in the world: “There is no attempt to hide that from the Republican voters”, he said. “It’s ubiquitous. It is. You have to go, you have to make a real effort to stay insulated from the facts.”

“They are, by choice, keeping themselves insulated from those facts”, he added. “Or, when they do hear them, they use their intelligence to discount it and somehow feel more intelligent.”
By this point, there was no way Wallace was interrupting Bateman: “They imagine there’s actually a conspiracy, and that there’s a deep state, and that somehow that’s a more complicated thought—and so that makes them feel smarter.
“It’s not like there’s some big effort to dupe America into thinking that Donald Trump is a bad guy, you know?”
