Trump, the Nobel Peace Prize, & "impact on a trade deal and Norway's $2 trillion sovereign wealth fund"

Norway is facing pressure from Donald Trump and his administration to award him the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has signaled that this pressure has been futile, with its head Jorgen Watne Frydnes indicating the decision on this year's award was made Monday.

There are concerns about the diplomatic and economic fallout for Norway should the committee snub Trump, including potential impact on a trade deal and Norway's $2 trillion sovereign wealth fund.

Watne Frydnes told Norwegian tabloid VG that the decision on this year’s award was made Monday. He also indicated in comments to public broadcaster NRK that the possible peace deal in the Middle East would only count toward next year’s award. Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has reiterated that the government does not interfere in Nobel decisions.

What a pathetic needy man. Nothing makes him happy. Trump is an endless deep well of unhappiness and insecurity. If he weren’t so dangerous it would be pitiful.

only concerned about the award, and not what the award represents.

In other words, he sees the Nobel Peace Prize as just another gaudy trinket that he can use to try and satiate his already bloated ego.

What a sad, shallow a person.

It's one of the more extreme examples...a Richie Rich draft dodger who called "having unprotected sex" his "own personal Vietnam," getting handed an award he didn't earn, reserved for Military members showing the highest level of valor.

Trump: 'I always wanted to get the Purple Heart. This was much easier' 08/02/2016

Howard Stern: Now, getting back to dating, right? And when you gotta say to a woman, "Hey, listen, you gotta go to my personal doctor, and I'm gonna have you checked out," is that a tough thing to say to a woman, or you just got the b***s to say it?

Donald Trump: You know? I tell you, it's amazing. I can't even believe it. I've been so lucky, in terms of that whole world.

Howard Stern: You've never gotten a social disease.

Donald Trump: It is a dangerous world out there. It is scary. It's like Vietnam, sort of like, you know, the Vietnam era.

Howard Stern: It is. It is your personal Vietnam.

Donald Trump: It is my personal Vietnam.

Howard Stern: You've said that many times.

Donald Trump: I feel like a great and very brave soldier.

There’s been strong lobbying for candidates before, but Trump’s brash and bombastic style, say experts, has jarred with a deep-rooted culture in Nordic societies that discourages self-promotion, and could make it harder for the committee to look past his persona.

“Culturally, Trump is very much an antithesis for Norway,” said Hilde Eliassen Restad, Associate Professor of International Studies at Oslo Nye University College. “He’s not subtle, not elegant, so that’s very much different this time.”

“But that’s how he achieves his goals,” she added, “so you could see why he would think he could get away with it.”

Its parliament appoints the members of the committee, some of whom are former MPs, but otherwise there's no connection. Not that this stopped Trump from calling up Norway's Finance Minister, Jens Stoltenberg (the former head of NATO and former Prime Minister) to pressure him about it.

With $2 trillion, I’m sure they have more leverage than Trump - what if the Norwegians decided to sell off their holdings of US treasury bonds?

How much does Norway import/export with the US compared to other nations?

Oh no! There’s a 200% tariff on imported lutefisk! Whatever shall I do?

Norway is bracing for the aftermath of the Nobel Peace Prize announcement on Friday as the Nordic nation has faced increasing pressure from Donald Trump and his administration to award it to the US leader.
Trump’s aggressive push to secure the prize, including public declarations he deserves it and calls to Norwegian officials, has intensified with a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and a possible peace deal. At the same time, the decisionmakers at the Norwegian Nobel Committee have signaled that this pressure has been futile.
...
His campaign has thrust Oslo into an uncomfortable spotlight, with media and observers worrying about the diplomatic and economic fallout for Norway should the independent five-member committee snub him. The latest comments from its head, Jorgen Watne Frydnes, to local media fell just short of confirming that Trump won’t get it at least this year — in line with past examples where pressure on the committee has been counterproductive.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if he tries to punish Norway with "crushing" tariffs on salmon and expensive wool sweaters.
