Hundreds of thousands of federal workers miss their 1st full paychecks as the government shutdown drags on

Through the first three weeks of the government shutdown, federal workers had been somewhat protected from the financial impact of the ongoing standoff in Congress. That started to change on Friday, when hundreds of thousands of federal employees missed their first full paychecks as a result of the shutdown.

“Our members, at no fault of their own, are having their lives upended, both financially and personally,” Randy Erwin, president of the National Federation of Federal Employees, wrote in a statement on Wednesday.

An estimated 750,000 federal employees have been furloughed since the beginning of the shutdown. Hundreds of thousands more have kept working, knowing they won’t be paid until after the government reopens.

A bill that would have allowed non-furloughed government workers to get paid throughout the shutdown was brought up for a vote in the Senate on Thursday, but was blocked by a Democratic filibuster. Even if it had passed through the Senate, that legislation would not have prevented paychecks from being missed on Friday because the House of Representatives was not in session to vote on it. After the failed vote, the Senate adjourned for the weekend.
