a very glaring issue or two has appeared about how this is presented by DOJ/FBI and the media. Notice how the big "bust" and the perp walk was black face after black face but supposedly this stuff was connected to the Mafia. Golly Mr. Peabody how come "Cash" Patel etc. weren't identifying and perp walking any of those faces? I mean OK we know how incompetent they are but does that mean the media couldn't put up pictures of the known bosses etc. in the families? So even though there were all of thee other people involved our "justice system" and media only run video, incessantly so, of the people of color. Reminds me of how they had their stereotyped pictures to run in articles about drugs.
A second thing that struck me is how the entire sports establishment that has willingly had gambling deeply embedded in it for decades has been quick to rush out and talk about the "sanctity of the game". What a pure load of BS. Gambling and shady goings on have been a part of big time sports for a very long time. Manipulation of players and foul calls is nothing new and, when you listen to the NBA ref who got nailed years ago, he said there were plenty of people taking part.
But we've all known that sports figures get coddled in this country and rules get bent all the time from the middle school years all the way up and through pro careers. So when you train people that this is the way and then they follow it why be surprised when big illegality follows?
Of course it's all wrong and shouldn't be done but this media circus is portraying this like the leagues, owners and others are not a huge part of why this goes on. These are the same folks who for years turned their heads about PED's because it made them big money. MLB loved the home runs for example and tried to claim with a straight face that there was nothing strange about a player making huge gains in muscle, bulk and strength from one season to the next. But as long as Pete Rose was alive they could use him as their sacrificial lamb to portray themselves as people upholding the "integrity" of the sport.
"Cash" Patel and Bondi love the distraction it provides for their own crime boss. But the media, leagues, owners and big time sports commentators bloviating about all of this are sickening as they act as though they play no part in the continuance of all of this. It's as if the piano player, bartender and owner of the establishment all claim that their entertainment, control and encouragement played no part in what was happening upstairs at the house of ill repute.
It's all wrong of course but at least the industry and media shouldn't get away with acting like they play no role in this. At the very least when things "go wrong" with having gambling deeply embedded in the leagues they shouldn't be allowed to get away with only showing us the pictures of some of the people involved when they know very well the pictures of the very powerful ones involved.

(23,372 posts)the point spreads on all the games, and the Friday parade of people hawking their picks (the first three are free!).
The leagues fucked around with gambling and are finding out what we all knew, that it has corrupted sports. Donaghy, (1), Black Sox, chilled or heated draft pick cards.
Raise your hand if you made an honest living. Coffe's on me, all 10 of us.

ETA: People were so sure that CA would legitimize sports betting in a recent election/propositions, that one radio station changed its name to "The Spread".
The prop failed. Oh, so sorry for you.
