(29 posts)My great uncle, a young West Point grad, was the only American officer killed in that expedition. One of his brothers was killed in France. Two other great uncles were priests - two of their earliest masses were their brothers' funerals. There's a good article about the family and their influence on DePaul University.

(2,634 posts)Mexico is very close to opening its Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which is a staggered set of rail and truck connections across the Isthmus that connects Atlantic and Pacific ports. This was originally intended to take some of the load off the Panama Canal, but Trump's rhetoric likely has highlighted to the rest of the world that it is also a way to lessen the danger of the US attempting to reassert control over the canal.
More here:
Like so much of Trump's "foreign diplomacy" his Panama Canal "doctrine" reflects very outdated data. I also suspect that he's largely ceded authority to Stephen Miller's pogrom, and because it's no longer top of mind, he's simply forgotten he ever said anything about it.

(37,535 posts)Danes agreed to seriously ramp up military spending in Greenland and in July '25 agreed to give the US more free access to Greenland. He still rumbles, but looking at the Russian bases and Arctic Ocean routes really does point out that the minimal staffing on Svalbard (which is pretty much a free port) and in Greenland are real weaknesses if Russia decides to do something bad after it's finished up doing the most recent bad things. The nuclear subs intended for the Atlantic are also a Real Bad Thing and between the subs and messing with Greenland they could make keeping the US and the rest of NATO actually united in any kind of useful logistical or economic way really difficult.
Panama pulled back seriously on cooperation with the PRC and exited the "Belt and Road" initiative in February; the Hong-Kong based operator of the ports at either end of the canal agreed to sell its interests in the ports to a US-based consortium. (The PRC objected strenuously, didn't follow the outcome to see if the sale went through.)
Some of this was reported here and pretty much sank into the Lethe, some never entered the room.
