Whoa -- Sen. Durbin went to up Leader Thune during the vote last night to tell him that on the shutdown vote and ACA promise that "8 of us are sticking our neck out that you're going to keep your word. I hope you will. He said 'I assure you I will,'" Durbin says just now

Whoa -- he promised to deliver a vote that will do nothing?
— Kevin M. Kruse (@kevinmkruse.bsky.social) 2025-11-10T18:34:19.985Z
Sanders: That is a totally meaningless gesture. You can get 100 votes here and it won't mean anything because the House is not going to take it up.

(8,151 posts)The issue is this: will there be subsidies for the ACA?
The issue is not this: will there be a vote for subsidies for the ACA?
The Republicans framed the whole thing around the second point. The Democrats WE THOUGHT were sticking to the first point, but have turned out to have accepted the second point. The second point is completely useless.
Durbin's great "Whoa!" triumph here is getting a verbal confirmation on the second point, which is useless.
Fuck's sake, we're in the weeds and goddamn sinking.

Hi. I would like to buy your house for $1, but you keep the current mortgage debt and keep paying it. In return I will give you a chance to shoot a basketball at a hoop i've conveniently placed on a different continent. If you make that basket, I will agree to pay your mortgage for 12 months. Otherwise, I get the house, and you keep the debt. And If you miss, you still mow the lawn for the next 5 years as well.
He can keep his word, and it costs him nothing, because a vote is meaningless.

(1,067 posts)If you think that Thune will expose Senate Republicans to a vote that will put them on the record for opposing the continuation of the subsidies, then I have a bridge to sell you. No way Thune will allow a vote to happen and create campaign ads for Democratic Senate candidates.
Thune did the math and realizes that all he has to do is wait out Durbin until next November and wait for the Democrats to remove Shumer either through a no confidence vote or a potential primary from AOC. Thune will be rewarded by Trump for being a good boy. However, Trump will still demand that the filibuster be removed because he has a laundry list of legislation that cannot be passed via reconciliation.
The Democratic leadership got played and Trump knows he holds all the cards.

(625 posts)is to whisper in their ears, You feel that tickle? Thats a shiv. Its there until the votes are in, in our favor. If there is any problem, well, you can live with one functioning kidney. Assuming you dont bleed out.
They have no honor. Weve seen that time and again. So dont expect them to honor their words.

(18,567 posts)... then I suggest that it is more evidence that we need these fossils out of government (and for the record, I am a fossil myself). They are playing by rules that have been obsolete for twenty years at least. We need realists in the Democratic Party who understand exactly what it is they are dealing with, not old cronies who think the world still operates under their old-boy unspoken rules.

(11,222 posts)It just seems that every "too clever by half" moves the Dem politicians make ends up being more of an advantage for the wealthy rather than for working folks. Having the government shut down benefited project 2025 more than anything. Federal workers need to get back on the job before Russell Vought's destruction gets any easier.

How many times have they gone back on their words? How many times have they screwed this country over after saying they wouldn't? How many times will it take before people take republicans for the liars and cheats that they are? They are not people who are capable of shame from their shameful actions.
And I can kind of see why they are so shameless, when democrats fall for the same bullshit over and over again. All they have to do is lie to the media and the American people and democrats cave. Sigh!
