The so-called blue wave that didnt quite crest in 2024 was more clearly in evidence this week, with a handful of Democratic female lawmakers rising to new heights in American politicsthanks in large part to the support of women under 30. Below, find five of the most significant wins for Democratic women on Tuesday.
-Abigail Spanberger became Virginias first female governor
Spanberger, a former Virginia congresswoman, beat out Winsome Earle-Sears (R) to turn the Virginia governorship blue, becoming the first woman to lead the state in the process. Spanberger, a former CIA officer who is frequently described as a pragmatic centrist, won support in by taking aim at the Trump Administrations Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cutbacks. She said on Tuesday night that her plan as governor includes pushing back against a variety of the bad policies that are coming out of this White House.
-Mikie Sherrill turned the New Jersey governors mansion blue with her election
New Jersey congresswoman Sherrill maintained Democratic control of New Jerseys gubernatorial seat on Tuesday when she was elected the states first female Democratic governor, beating out Republican nominee and Trump ally Jack Ciattarelli. (In a fun twist, Sherrill and Spanberger were actually roommates on Capitol Hill six years ago, during their respective tenures as freshman members of Congress.)
-Ghazala Hashmi became the first Muslim American woman elected to statewide office anywhere in the US
-Mary Sheffield was elected the first female mayor of Detroit
-Michelle Wu was reelected as mayor of Boston

Post after post after post talk of Mamdani's win. News networks carried his swearing in live!!! AOC was there; Bernie was there. Cool beans, but what about the WOMEN that fought greater odds and won by HUGE MARGINS!
What about the women, sad that I even have to ask that question. Fact, women are the ones that are going to change the world and set it right and it is way past time that we acknowledge that fact.
I am disappointed that some only celebrated a man's win and celebrated the celebration of his inauguration.

Harry Belafonte said it well:
Man Smart (Woman Smarter)
To find out which one is smarter
Some say man, but I say no
The women got the men beat, they should know
And not me, but the people they say
That the man are leading the women astray
But I say that the women of today
Smarter than the man in every way
That's right, the woman is, uh, smarter
That's right, the woman is, uh, smarter
That's right, the woman is, uh, smarter
That's right, that's right
Ah, ever since the world began
Woman was always teaching man
And if you listen to my bid attentively
I goin' tell you how she smarter than me

Katie Wilson sworn in as Seattle mayor: This is your city
Katie Wilson was sworn in as Seattle mayor Friday in a ceremony that marked the beginning of an era at City Hall that will test her core campaign pledge that progressives can deliver results.
Wilson, 43, is the youngest mayor in a generation. She comes to the post not from the corporate world or by scaling political rungs, but through a career of advocacy for higher wages, better transit and more stringent laws to protect renters. Now, she faces an almost perfectly divided city after defeating incumbent Bruce Harrell by roughly 2,000 votes, the closest race in modern Seattle history.
This is your city, Wilson declared in her inaugural address Friday.
She acknowledged the transition she will undergo from someone used to protesting and advocating to leading the city on projects that werent always part of her fight. With that in mind, Wilson said, shes had a bit of a crisis of conscience.
Im kind of a rabble-rouser. I campaigned on affordability, on homelessness, on taxing the rich, she said.
