War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the masses.

(4,280 posts)... of a bunch of greedy rich fucks, he dropped a dime on 'em and testified under oath to a Senate committee. Nothing was done.
Prescott Bush got his ass in a sling again during WWII when a bank he and Averell Harriman had substantial interests in got caught doing business with the Nazis in '42. Again, nothing was done, apart from the U.S. seizing the assets of the Union Banking Corporation.
It's good to be a filthy rich crook, as we now see on a daily basis.

(2,302 posts)I am pretty sure at least. The United States Marine Corps was smaller and pretty close-knit 100 years ago. My grandfather was an officer and the commander of Canp Matthews (where the University of California at San Diego is now located).
As a kid, I heard the name Smedey Butler mentioned from time to time in the house. I knew nothing about him and thought i was the name of some cartoon character.
Later on my oldest sister explained to me that our grandmother was "very much the grand dame" and hosted parties and gatherings at their house in San Diego. There are photos of them having lots of guests, some of which were Marines in uniform.
So I think it's likely that they knew General Butler socially. I didn't figure all this out and knew who he was until many years later, long after both of my grandparents had passed away. If I had earlier, I would have asked my grandmother about him.
