No, this is not my country.
My country does not illegally attack another country, regardless of what drugs they might be pushing.
This is not a sign of strength, it is a sign of weakness.
I am not defending Maduro or Venezuela.
I am defending the US Constitution.

(44,833 posts)They are the real culprit, and war, criminals, and real threat to our national security. I think we need to Congress to give us a clear definition of natural security. Drugs do not threaten our existence. The president did not take an oath to protect the American people. The oath is to protect the constitution, folks.

... nobody's driving ossifer, we're all in the back seat!
Those with the authority to rein this monster in either have a vested interest in his depredations, are too chickenshit to do anything, or, most likely, both.
(On edit) The Uniform Code of Military Justice to which you referred is quite specific regarding illegal orders. This fiasco most definitely qualifies as an illegal order. The 1968 My Lai Massacre in Viet Nam was stopped by a chopper pilot named Hugh Thompson and his crew, citing the code as justification for the intervention. At first, he apparently got into trouble for it, but a more careful review of the events showed him to be a hero, and he was vindicated. Lieutenant Calley was not so lucky.

(816 posts)didnt he campaign on not starting any forever wars? Didnt he campaign on America first? How does invading Venezuela benefit us in any way? Magats are too stupid to realize this.

(53,214 posts)were even paying that much attention to what he said when he campaigned. It was pretty easy to let it go in one ear and out the other as he rambled into incoherent nonsense much of the time.
They'd made up their minds and he was the alternative to the "radical leftist communists". Until his actions affect them directly and profoundly, they'll probably continue to support him. It's not like they've put a lot of thought into supporting him.

(22,223 posts)Maybe a bump up for a few milliseconds. But then we're back to the real world. After all, most Americans couldn't pick out Venezuela on a map if they were forced to and really don't care. They've got more pressing problems at home.
The only upside if you want to call it that is the release of some sanctions related to Venezuelan oil. But that's only minor since Venezuelan production has increased every month since 2022. Don't expect much relief at the gas pump from all these shenanigans.
In my mind, this is a whole lot to do about not much and people won't remember it in 3 months. What will be interesting is trying to prosecute Maduro on something....anything. The regime is almost guaranteed to royally fuck that up.

(10,013 posts)[Verse 1]
As if I really didn't understand
That I was just another part of their plan
I went off looking for the promise
Believing in the Motherland
From the comfort of a dreamer's bed
And the safety of my own head
I went on speaking of the future
While other people fought and bled
[Pre-Chorus]
The kid I was when I first left home
Was looking for his freedom and a life of his own
But the freedom that he found wasn't quite as sweet
When the truth was known
[Chorus]
I have prayed for America
I was made for America
It's in my blood and in my bones
By the dawn's early light
By all I know is right
We're gonna reap what we have sown
[Verse 2]
As if freedom was a question of might
As if loyalty was black and white
You hear people say it all the time
"My country wrong or right"
I want to know what that's got to do
With what it takes to find out what's true
With everyone from the President on down
Trying to keep it from you
[Pre-Chorus]
The thing I wonder about the Dads and Moms
Who send their sons to the Vietnams
Will they really think their way of life
Has been protected as the next war comes?
[Chorus]
I have prayed for America
I was made for America
Her shining dream plays in my mind
By the rocket's red glare
A generation's blank stare
We better wake her up this time
Yeah
[Pre-Chorus]
The kid I was when I first left home
Was looking for his freedom and a life of his own
But the freedom that he found wasn't quite as sweet
When the truth was known
[Chorus]
I have prayed for America
I was made for America
I can't let go 'til she's come around
Until the land of the free
Is awake and can see
And until her conscience has been found

The Supreme Court Justices are political appointees and they have no enforcement mechanism.
See the reality?

(948 posts)It is typically done for the benefit of wealthy interests and corporations: Plantation (sugar cane) and other tropical fruit companies were early beneficiaries (think Hawai, the Philippines, Caribbean, among other nations), as were Oil and defense companies - any interests of the rich. Manifest Destiny and the Monroe doctrine have long been a thing in the good ol USA. We did, after all, learn from the worlds premier colonists
I wouldnt be surprised if he has plans to invade Mexico next. The guy is a raving lunatic. He, Putin, Xi, Netanyahu, Un, and probably the Saudis are all divvying up the planet amongst themselves. Meanwhile, we sit here and complain on a little electrical gadget because nobody in a position to do anything is leading the charge. We need mass mobilization to counter these guys and it needs to be in a global scale.

(15,634 posts)No. The truest way to love OUR country is striving to make it better.
In the eyes of the world, The Felon is turning America into a pariah nation. What our government does, it does in ALL our names.
Trust, once tossed aside and lost, will require much effort and time to earn again.
That Shining City on a Hill is an ideal sometimes glimpsed, but never fully reached. I think we all want our country to be a shining beacon for a troubled world.
Time to roll up our sleeves and get to work.

(26,876 posts)my italic, underline from AI info, but I've known there's that second part of the quote for a long time
Stephen Decatur (1816): The idea began with a toast where he said, "Our country! In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be in the right; but our country, right or wrong," meaning loyalty to the nation itself, not necessarily its actions in foreign affairs.
Carl Schurz (1872): A German-born senator, he popularized the phrase but added the crucial caveat: "My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right".
