House Democrats are working with moderate Republicans to reach 218 to impeach Trump before March 31 for abuse of power.

u.mmm An impeachment might slow Trumps abuse down somewhat--maybe.

Is there a discharge petition? As far as I knew there were not a ton of democrats that even signed onto recent attempts. Am I mistaken?

Al Green tried introducing impeachment resolutions 3 times in 2025 and Shri Thanedar tried once. No other Democrats signed onto these because they knew not a single Republican would vote to impeach. This time it's different because clearly a number of Republicans have signaled a willingness to possibly vote for impeachment. Democrats won't move forward with it unless they are reasonably assured impeachment would be successful.

(According to a quick google search)

But yeah
I’m don’t understand why hate e are five votes away from and how since no action has technically been taken officially on this and few democrats have actually signed onto it.

it never has been used for such.

No articles of impeachment against Trump have been introduced yet. Rep. McClain-Delaney has discussed it. The point of my prior post was that it will not get support from all Democrats until they are reasonably assured enough Republicans will vote to impeach. It will only be introduced at that point so if/when it is, it means they've gotten the necessary support from Republicans. I have no idea what the significance of March 31 is supposed to be as referred to in the OP.

In the meantime, Articles of Impeachment have been introduced (or are in the process of being introduced) against Kristi Noem by Representative Robin Kelly. 53 Democrats have signed on as co-sponsors. I believe it is reasonable to assume that all Democrats will support Noem impeachment, and they must believe they can get enough Republicans to vote for it as well.

Rep. Kelly announces plans to impeach Secretary Kristi Noem
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (IL-02) announced plans to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following the fatal shooting by an ICE officer in Minneapolis.

“Secretary Kristi Noem is an incompetent leader, a disgrace to our democracy, and I am impeaching her for obstruction of justice, violation of public trust, and self-dealing. Secretary Noem wreaked havoc in the Chicagoland area, and now, her rogue ICE agents have unleashed that same destruction in Minneapolis, fatally shooting Renee Nicole Good,” said Rep. Kelly. “From Chicago to Charlotte to Los Angeles to Minneapolis, Secretary Noem is violating the Constitution while ruining—and ending—lives, and separating families. It’s one thing to be incompetent and dangerous, but it’s impeachable to break the rule of law. I told my constituents and Chicagoans that I would fight against Secretary Noem’s agenda. This is me fighting back.”

Rep. Kelly will file three articles of impeachment against Secretary Noem:

1.Obstruction of Congress: Secretary Noem willfully obstructed Congressional oversight and withheld Congressionally appropriated funds in violation of her constitutional oath and federal law.
2.Violation of Public Trust: Secretary Noem compromised public safety, violated due process of American citizens, and directed unconstitutional actions.
3.Self-Dealing: Secretary Noem abused her office for personal benefit and steered federal dollars to associates.

Scoop: Over 50 House Dems sign onto Kristi Noem impeachment articles
By the numbers: A total of 53 House Democrats signed on to the bill by the Tuesday afternoon co-sponsorship deadline, according from a list obtained by Axios.

-Several of the co-sponsors represent battleground districts, including Reps. Gabe Vasquez (D-N.M.), Eric Sorensen (D-Ill.) and Dave Min (D-Calif.).
-Others, such as Reps. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) and Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), are well-known centrists who are now in competitive Democratic primaries for U.S. Senate seats.
-Kelly's office told Axios that several more lawmakers may still sign on as co-sponsors later on.
The details: The articles, set to be formally unveiled Wednesday, will accuse Noem of three counts.

-Obstruction of Congress: For instances in which members of Congress were denied entry to DHS facilities and for withholding congressionally appropriated disaster relief funding.
-Violation of public trust: For allegedly denying ICE detainees due process and violating the First and Fourth amendments.
-Self-dealing: Over reports that Noem awarded $220 million in contracts to a firm run by her top spokesperson's husband.

0-3 will just embolden him. Not that I don’t believe he should be impeached, but I don’t think impeachment alone will change his behavior.
