......gifts in general. Wasn't there something about Presidents leaving these gifts behind when they left office because they were given to the Presidency and not the current president? So therefore, property of the USA? I know, I know. He'll take the china and silverware when he leaves this time, but I'm talking about propriety.

(129,325 posts)but the gift of the medal from Machado likely wouldnt violate the emoluments clause since she is not a head of state. Any gifts retained by the president that are not from a close relative may have to be declared in an annual disclosure report to the Office of Government Ethics and he might have to pay federal tax on the appraised value of the gift. The NPP medal is struck in 18-karat green gold plated with 24-karat gold and weighs about 175 grams (0.386 lb), and the name of the recipient is engraved on the edge. Since Machado's medal is mounted and framed, her name on its edge won't be visible - maybe Trump wanted it displayed that way for that reason (I thought he'd have wanted it attached to a ribbon so he could wear it around his neck). Its value in gold is probably about $20K but NPP medals have been sold for $millions.

(1,250 posts)It's just a lump of metal. No honor was transferred.
It's as phony as those Time magazine covers he had made up about himself.
He's just the same phony, insecure (with good reason) asshole he always has been.
