Brownback says his changes in Kansas are an example for the nation

Gov. Sam Brownback is easy to underestimate.

Gov. Chris Christie trumps him with reliable bombast and a guest spot on “Saturday Night Live,” but Brownback is every bit as much the spending hard-liner as the New Jersey boss.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker survived a recall after a collision with public employee unions, yet Brownback is just as likely to stare down labor.

Former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels might be Mr. Privatize to some. Still, Brownback is just as ready to farm out governmental tasks to business.

The Kansas kingpin has rammed through massive income tax cuts, wiped away thousands of public sector jobs and slashed spending for public broadcasting and social services.

He squeezed four state agencies into other departments. He handed the state’s Medicaid program to private insurance companies. He’s taken thousands off welfare by rewriting the rules that once made them eligible for help.

The man is just getting started.

This state is a lost cause west of Topeka as Wichita is completely under the spell of the religious conservatives and the booming Hispanic population out west refuses to vote or refuses to vote Dem. Johnson County's connection to (and anchoring of?) the KC metro area is almost the only hope we have. There has to be a way to wake up all of the transplants, young voters and socially connected people in the state's largest and most urban\suburban county.

I thought the 2011 and 2012 legislative sessions brought horrible bills to light. I can only imagine what horrors are in store for 2013 now that tea baggers are pretty much a super majority in the state Senate. Some of these new legislators make Brownback seem almost moderate in comparison. It's frightening to be a Kansan right now, especially a Kansas Democrat.

if the legislators simply don't understand how they're ruining people's lives as well as the state.

And I hate to say it, since I still have friends and relatives there but I'm very glad I left.

They are motivated only by the economic\financial ideals of the tea baggers and the religious ideals of the Christian Taliban. Nothing else matters to these people.

that is exactly it, they do not care about the people only trying to prove their ideals. I know because I have tried to talk with them about issues. At least they let us in the door even if they did not listen. That is better than we got from the democrats <----75% of the reason we are where we are now. Sam has always said he wants to make an example of us, our state, to be looked up to and emulated by others. LOL, we will be lucky to come out of this alive or ever able to make up the deficit he is causing.

We are resting in the hands of the Talibornagain, Kock brothers, Tea baggers. Sam is thrilled. Those in the state who are as well are really in for some awakening. I hope the rest of us can survive to see the looks on their faces when they see what they have wrought.

doing. That's like saying we just didn't understand Hitler. This place is going off the deep end and the inmates are seriously now running the state. And the blame falls squarely on the voters in Kansas. They vote these critters into office. These people are evil and dangerous, and they have now fully seized power after the 2012 elections.

We've sold the business here are leaving. This is not place to raise kids, to live, and/or to grow old. It used to be a nice place, but now it's getting to be a concentration of wackos. Like is too short to put up with Kansas and its bad vibes for humanity.

from here. You sound young enough to be seeing this early. Having spent almost 60 years here I can't, or won't, leave but if I had seen this coming when I was younger I would have been gone as soon as I could have gotten away.

Wish us luck. Everyone who leaves, and believe me I do not blame you nor would I ever hold it against you, leaves us one more short on the left side of the coin (if there is still even a side we can claim).

changing, but it's accelerating now greatly over the past 4 or 5 years especially. Tolerance seems to be vaporizing. Call it a 6th sense or whatever, but it's there, somethings in the wind. TPTB talk of more jobs, prosperity, KS as the center of the employment universe (LOL) and a great family life.

What this is, is Control-Freakism. This is not financial conservatism. The people of Kansas have given their state to control fanatics wanting to control every aspect of ones life. And I dare say if one scratches under the surface, some are quite desirous of a theocratic dystopia ... with their brand of religion and their god indelibly stamped on everyone. We find it creepy. What really freaks us out is many people in Kansas are nice, and many parts of the state are beautiful, and then the people go and vote, vote in these critters despite all evidence showing this is a very bad idea to vote them in.
