Menendez, 31, was awaiting arraignment on the charge Saturday evening, Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said. She could face 25 years to life in prison if convicted. She was in custody and couldn't be reached for comment, and it was unclear if she had an attorney.
Menendez, who was arrested after a tip by a passer-by who saw her on a street and thought she looked like the woman in a surveillance video released by police, admitted shoving Sen, who was pushed from behind, authorities said.
"I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers I've been beating them up," Menendez told police, according to the district attorney's office.

Mind numbingly stupid at too many levels to count. First, the vast majority of Muslims had no more to do with 9-11 than the vast majority of Christians had to do with the OKC bombing. Secons, Hindus (as far as I know) had zero, zip, zilch, nada to do with 9-11 (correct me if I missed something there).

(1,370 posts)The reason why the deceased gentleman approached her in the first place is she was acting aggressively and disturbing other patrons. I assume in the NY subway system there's a pretty high threshold before one is seen as disturbed above and beyond the usual.

Care Acutely
(1,370 posts)But to address your statement. People who are not mentally ill can make a decision (and worldwide, billions do) to hate someone based on race, color, creed, religion, etc. It is not inherently insane - it is usually cultural conditioning or upbringing. Its a value system, or even a part of their religion. Not all irrational practices are indicative of mental illness - just poorly chosen or expressed behavior. Determining that all "bad thinking" is mental illness is deleterious to the actual challenges of mental health.
