I kid not.
People are buying Windows 8 at a slower rate than they did with Vista.
I'd go find copies of Windows 7 soon, before they take it off the market like they had to with XP.

"With just a week left in the month, Windows 8's usage uptake has slipped behind Vista's at the same point in its release, data from a Web measurement company showed.
According to Net Applications, Windows 8's online usage share through Dec. 22 was 1.6% of all Windows PCs, an uptick from 1.2% of November. Windows 8 publicly launched on Oct. 26."

(15,396 posts)Vista ME 95......all junk.

(24,382 posts)it was 98 that really sucked. Mainly because Dll hell had reached a tipping point.
I hardly ever had blue screens on 95, but with 98 my computer had tons of blue screens.

(24,382 posts)We had the original and then because of computer shows, we ended up getting OSR2 semi-legally. I didn't really understand that's not how it was supposed to work, but hey we paid for it and everything.

There are things about 7 that irritate me, but nowhere near the irritation level of Vista or 8.

(24,382 posts)if you changed that, it was like butter.
Mind you, I only use Windows from time to time at home now that I have a Mac, but I use it regularly at work. It really pisses me off to see how shitty it became after XP.
XP was not great by any means, but I'd take Windows Fisher Price before iOS wannabe. Even when Apple fucked up Mac OS, they still didn't fuck it up that bad.

(41,694 posts)and stupid shit like hiding the Run command.
Plus the bloating on memory use.
One time I built 2 identical machines hardware wise. One had XP, one Vista. Guess which one outperformed the other on every test.

(9,612 posts)The change from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 was shocking but welcome because it was a big improvement. Plus it was still similar in nature to the previous version (desktop with icons and windows).
Windows 8 completely takes everything that the Windows experience has stood for and thrown it out the window, no pun intended. No more desktop, no more menu, no more windowed applications. It's going back to the days of DOS and Desqview with a graphic interface to facilitate switching.
It's not "Windows 8," it's "Tiles 1." Or maybe we should call it what it really is, "Bob 2."

(1,140 posts)And windowed applications. The only thing that's really different is the lack of the start menu and its replacement with the live tile screen.
theKed
(1,235 posts)functionally the same as the old start menu. Theres other stuff you *can* do with it, but not required by any means. You could strip out every live app and non-windowed program with no repercusions...easier than removing IE, really.
A lot of 8 hate seems to be garden-variety change-fear.

(55,894 posts)a real world desk top is simply not as neat and efficient as having a filing cabinet with them hung vertically in one row.
To me, it's visual pollution to have that much information at once.
Normal Windows is like having, say, four file cabinets in each corner for certain subjects. You go the filing cabinet you need and pick the file you want in a more lineal fashion.
Edit- if I were redesigning the Tile Screen, I'd make them a bit smaller, rounded edge with frames
more like what you see on iTouch for instance or tablets. And also have a spot where you can swipe to other tile screens and move the tiles to other categorized screens.

Please, jeebus, dont let them make it look like that ios tripe. Size adjustment i could dig, though.
Its only as cluttered as you want it to be (the "all apps" page is a clusterfuck though)

(1,140 posts)Its a little different, but I think the interface actually works quite a bit better. The live tiles instead of the start menu, once you get used to it, work a lot better and its easier to organize, the OS starts a LOT faster, and as far as I can tell, its pretty much kickass. I think the thing most people have a problem with is the lack of the start button, but once you get used to the new UI, its a lot quicker and more intuitive.

(32,086 posts)There are several suggested programs at the Computers & Internet group. I installed the one from Pokki. I hardly ever use it. I find myself going back to the tiles far more often. I moved the programs I use most to the front, and they're a lot easier to get to than the crappy, nested START menu of the old versions.
The one thing I do hate about Win8 is the way "apps" are closed. Fine for a tablet, but it sucks for mouse/touchpad. Fortunately, I don't use many of them. One can still close programs like Word the usual way. And, speaking of programs, I am using 10-year-old XP-based software with Win8, and it seems to be working just fine.

(10,340 posts)I bought a new laptop that came with Win8, and I was prepared to hate it all the way. But once I started using it, I actually started warming up to it. As someone else pointed out, it boots up faster than previous versions. From what I've researched, Windows 8 security seems to be much improved as well. The interface does take a lot of getting used to, but it actually seems much more practical than what I've used in the past.
I just have to wonder how much of this "flop" has to do with all the knee-jerk negative reaction to such a different interface? I admit that I was one of those saying how it seemed like a horrible system.

(9,527 posts)But I think that those who have to call it Winbloze, wouldn't have anything good to say about it even if it were perfect.
I'm waiting to find a good deal on a touch screen laptop to get Windows 8. I don't really need a new computer yet although I'd like one. I'm expecting that CES will preview some good touch screen laptops.

(39,961 posts)That it is essentially Microsoft Window. I've been using it for over 2 weeks now. Is it more usable than when I first got it? Yes. Do I like it? No.
I'm popping an ssd drive in it and putting Windows 7 on it. I find 8 to be unstable.

(55,894 posts)you could swipe to > or click to. Thus allowing categorizing what tiles are on what screens.
Having a screen full of large, ugly boxes with a multitude of functions/subjects/apps is simply a huge turn-off for me.
Can you change the size of the tiles/boxes on the screen and minimize them.
The reason iTouch doesn't bother me is the boxes are relatively smaller and I can organize them amongst several screens.
The Tile Screen looks to me like a game board with all those huge multi-colored boxes.
Hugabear
(10,340 posts)I don't know yet about resizing the tiles. I'm sure you can, because some of the ones are already larger than others. You can have as many or as few tiles on your screen as you like. In a way, it's not too entirely different from having icons on your previous Windows desktop screens, except that these are larger, and some can relay information in real time without having to click on them.
I bought the laptop for my wife, she's the one primarily using it. She really likes it so far - and she was just as opposed to Win8 as I was, if not more so. I haven't really had a chance to tinker around with it yet, but from my limited time thus far it seems that many of the criticisms are misguided.
Much of it simply has to do with how we're used to things, most of us don't really like dramatic change.

(39,961 posts)I got a laptop with it. I've fought with it to make it usable, but it is crashy, and beyond that, Metro is the most annoying piece of crap I've ever encountered in an OS. I'm popping an ssd drive in there with Windows 7 on it. H8 is horrible.

(39,961 posts)We shall see if it is the hardware, my new laptop, or Windows 8. I'm popping a fresh ssd drive in there with 7 on it. Honestly, I don't think it's the hardware, because this is a nice little machine. I don't like the fact that it tends to hang on resume, and I have to close the cover again, send it into suspend and then resume it again. It's fairly annoying.
