Rollins classes focus on using business to solve social ills

Rollins College hopes to become a national leader in an emerging academic field that prepares graduates to make money while making the world a better place.

Called social entrepreneurship, it focuses on using business principles to fix social problems.

Chrissy Garton, herself an alumna of the Winter Park college, is director of social innovation for Rollins. She said changing priorities among today's students is a key driver of the new program.

"It's no longer good enough for a lot of these students to have a day job and do some volunteer work on the side," she said. "They really see their career as a vehicle to make social change."

The college is offering three classes — "Social Entrepreneurship," "Impact Investing" and "Strategy for Changemakers" — for the first time during the spring semester, which starts in January. (The Crummer Graduate School of Business previously offered a social-

so the rich get richer and the homeowners see land and welfare go out the window. It's a whole community corruption scheme that needs to be exposed. Once all the loopholes are pointed out, MAYBE social entrepreneurship will have a place in our society.
