Something about WWI is so inutterably poignant; all wars are and all deaths in war are, but although I am not a student of history it seems that in this one in particular, the soldiers were so naive and their deaths so numerous for, often, absolutely no gains.

In one scene a young German soldier, fresh from the front, visits his alma mater. The boys, only a few years younger, asks him what combat is like. He replies, "We fight. And we try not to be killed."

And my favorite, a scene where three German soldiers are sitting around a campfire, musing about how wars get started.

"It's when one country offends another," says one.
"You mean a hill in Germany gets mad at a field in France?" says another.
"No, I mean when one people offends another. Yes, that's it."
"Then why am I here?" says a grizzled old sergeant. "I don't feel offended."

Yes, there is just something about World War 1.
