(2,526 posts)For those of us that mainly enjoy the political theater... it was becoming a boring rerun.
I'm glad it's finally going away.

(1,415 posts)So we get :
Tax rates go up 400k for singles.. 450k for married couples TO 39.6
UE extension (i have family members that are oow.. I guarantee you the repukes would have let those go for months and what about those people ... they would be fucked!!)
Estate tax rates go to 40 percent (5 mil exemption)
All the stimulis tax credits (except the payroll tax-cut.. but that essentially preserves SSI)
So we have got all revenue and no spending cuts? Not perfect but we get 80% of what we want and people are whining? Unfortunately they control the freakin house!!! It ain't a perfect world.. but things are moving in the right direction.. shit I remember when these assholes wouldn't even pass a million dollar tax threshold..
You heard the President.. if the REpubs think they are going to get only spending cuts and no tax revenue to offset in future negotiations they are mistaken.. Our Pres is not perfect.. but he is not a caver.. Thank god R/R did not win otherwise you would be looking at cuts accross the board in spending (ie SSI and Medicare would be voucherized) more tax cuts for the rich and more reckless wars...Life ain't perfect .. now lets get this debt ceiling done and the sequestration done and move on to fixing immigration and at least getting a 30 round magazine ban started and move on to a tougher assault ban.. we are winning on all fronts... ! Its not perfect .. but who is .. really...This is the most progressive our country has ever been in decades.. things don't happen over-night!!
Just my .02!!

(563 posts)I don't know about everyone else, but for the most part I'm satisfied with the deal. At this point I am kind of shocked republicans caved this quick on taxes, it may not have been the original 250K, but the fact that not that long ago the GOP wouldn't even vote to raise taxes on people making 1 million or more seems pretty good. Again, I figured the GOP wouldn't cave yet at least until we went over the cliff, the damage began, and there was no more time to continue to kick the can down the road. The fight over spending cuts will begin in 2 months, which will be interesting to watch, at least some of the bad seeds will be out of our senate and congress by then.

(7,862 posts)Hell, the spineless Senate apparently wouldn't even hold the vote last night, when it would have been voting to raise taxes. Instead, they put on this show after midnight, after we've already gone over "the fiscal cliff," and vote overwhelmingly to LOWER TAXES.
The comical part of it is that due to the payroll tax cut not being extended, most low and middle class families will see an increase in their taxes over the next year from the previous year.
In exchange for no agreement on sequestration, spending cuts, the debt ceiling, or "entitlement" reform, you got a deal that results in raising taxes for most lower and middle class families. It's a sad day when that's considered a "win" by Democrats. Just wait a couple of months when their backs are up against the wall and Republicans are holding everything hostage once again and this time there is no tax deal to fall back on.
