I hope we Dems are thinking about this eventuality. The guy is crazy enough and powerful enough to think he can get away with it. That we won't be able to do anything about it and his base will cheat his way back in again. His base will support him and see to it that he gets his wish.
Is anybody else feeling this way?

(341 posts)These are legacy projects. He's trying to immortalize himself my having his name on things that he think's will be there in 100 years.
But I think there's a better chance that none of them are done when he leaves office and the next President rips them out root and stem.

If Trump is out of the picture, there may be a Primary which ought to be a zoo.
Heck I am looking forward to the runoff for Senate here. I have stocked up on popcorn

(68,151 posts)What I want to believe is that our country will have HAD it with the Trumps of the world and will never, ever try another one like him. but I know better. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty (who said that?).

(2,734 posts)it's that 'had it' with absolute brushing aside rules/norms that is part of why I feel this way.
Related point: a 'truth and reconciliation' type effort (of something that more closely mirrors Germany's looking in the mirror post-WW2) is going to be needed to rid our national leadership with much of this mess and institutionalize sexism, racism, etc.

(23,065 posts)No matter what Trump says or does, he will not be on the 2028 ballot in any state, and his term will end no later than noon on 1/20/29.
Discussion of a third term is a distraction from the actual challenges facing us in the present moment.

He will run under the trump party and split the vote among Rs. He will refuse to leave the White House.

(7,036 posts)Can't be done. If it was tried, in some backhand way, any one of several hundred federal judges and appeals courts would strike it down.
I've had kids in my constitution class ask this question, a good one, I point out. Do some research and see what would happen if he tried.
I got several good answers. Most of them discovered that since the 22nd amendment suprecedes state election law, he wouldn''t be able to get on the ballot and his electors could not get ballots. No legislative action could reverse this.
The party would never take the risk of nominating him, losing the issue in court before the election, and having to hand it over to the Democrats by default, or of losing their seats in Congress because whole ballots would be thrown out.
Their conclusion is that it won't ever happen,, because it will never even get to court, it will be stopped by the election commission in each of the states. And several kids said he'll be dead before then anyway.
I like good critical thinking.

(13,678 posts)It may come late enough in the cycle that the GOP will not be able to field a viable alternative. But the populace will not vote Republican anyhow because of the wreckage they have caused this country.
